#27201 First Studio Shoot

Posted by iNYONi on 28 September 2014 - 10:17 AM

Yesterday I got the chance to work with a semi pro model and a pro photographer in their studio in Glasgow. It was a fantastic experience. I have a few hours to play around and get some great advice. We had 4 different set ups, so I'll post a few from each. First and my favourite was the natural light studio. The model was in casual clothes, slight makeup and the only light source was from the large south facing window. All taken on my D7100 with my Nikon 50mm F/1.8G lens.

#26893 Editing mini-challenge, week ending 28 September 2014

Posted by Jesper on 22 September 2014 - 06:08 AM

In PS. I've separated Rick from the background, saved as a new layer and converted to smart object so that i could open it up in Camera Raw. In CR highlights/shadows slightly adjusted, exposure dropped a quarter of a stop plus clarity and vibrance increased slightly and sharpening added. Applied Gaussian blur to background and added a graduating filter coming down from the top right to mask the washed out sky.

D4X_5129a_zpsfa214158.jpg

In PS. Rick again removed from picture and saved as a new layer. Milky way, moon and Mars added from royalty free stock pictures as new individual layers. Dropped opaqueness down to 60% for the moon and 70% for Mars. The Rick layer again converted to a smart object and the same adjustments made that i made on the first edit. Reflected Ricks position to give better balance. Round marque used to cut out a section of starfield and used to darken and bring some detail of the stars as reflections in Ricks helmet. Blended using overlay.
Exported to LR to adjust global colour tone and melding the composite.

Shot college football yesterday and have been through only a small subset of the images so far...silly me forgot the card reader for anything other than the D600's SD cards on the trip and then spent 8+ hours driving home today...two big backups because of accidents made it a longer drive than usual...sat with the RV in Park for over 30 minutes in the second!

Yesterday was pretty cold, damp and cloudy at the field.  My son's girl friend is one of the majorettes so as far as he was concerned, she was "my assignment" in her first game with the school...So first, some of the pre-game shots of her...all with my D4, 200-400, f4, ISO 1600...

And yes, there was a football game...will try to get through them and post some more at some point...

Had to edit as the order of the photos was messed up on my first post...

Well, I had some time this morning that I didn't expect to have, so got far enough through editing my Thursday night shoot to post a couple of pix!

It has been a crazy couple of weeks and it looks like that trend is going to continue for awhile...will fill in some details as we get things sorted out a bit...

TheBird-1956.jpg

D4, 200-400 at 350mm and f4, 1/1250, ISO 12800 - it was like he was begging me to get his photo!

Yes, Thursday I got one more opportunity to "Shoot with the Pros" before the season comes to an end.  I'll post more about it later when I've had time to go through the rest of the MANY photos I shot.  Might take awhile with the fall high school sports starting...and no, all the crazy has nothing to do with my shooting the baseball game although it was a last minute, figure out how to fit it in kind of thing...

One of my friend's critiques of my photos from the last game was that I wasn't using a high enough shutter speed to stop the motion (ball, bat, etc.).  So I did some experimentation shooting at various speeds to see where that sweet spot was.  It appears that 1/3200 does a pretty good job in almost all cases, but 1/4000 is definitely better...I was also pushing the ISO to see what the D4 could handle.  The shot below is cropped heavily as I was at 330mm to photograph the pitcher and didn't have enough time to zoom in before this shot of the short stop throwing the ball to first in the 9th inning.  D4, ISO 12800, f4, 1/4000.

JJHardy-2171.jpg

I think my friend will be happy with that one :)

So, I'm sitting in a campground in NC for the weekend with no cameras (other than my iPhone).  I'm glad I didn't bring them as we have more than enough going on, but there is a beautiful lake with lots of ducks and MANY other things that are reminding me why I (almost :)) always bring one or more cameras along.

I'm going to be shooting all three (Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity) volleyball teams on Tuesday in one of their first games of the season...hopefully I'll be shooting football on Friday as well, so the D4 will be getting a good workout this week and I will end up being happy that I took the weekend off from photography...

OK...I did take a few...the one above is our pups making sure the ducks don't come too close to the RV...

Took this in New York while walking Rowdy. I'll add the non cropped version, but I really like the cropped image. Really makes me want a macro lens.

Went out last night with a friend to see if we could get the Milky Way over the Spiral Jetty. Clouds showed up and chased us away before the Milky Way got into a better position, darn it. Lots of noise and light pollution--and a storm camera left…oh well! It was still a fun adventure--I've never been out to the Spiral Jetty before, so that was cool.

I really think I'm going to have to break down and get that 14-24mm...

Been a busy bee! This first shot was from a weekend breakaway 'Glamping' (Posh camping for those who don't know.) We stayed in a glorified shed. As the sun was setting I managed to get my boy to come and stand on the steps. Modified in Lightroom to enhance to conrast and increase the atmosphere.

This second shot was from my first proper photoshoot (with people in). My brother in law is selling t-shirts and wanted to get a selection of shots for his new website to promote the range. This one was my personal best.
