#37710 Weather Sealing 200-500mm?

Posted by asque2000 on 31 March 2016 - 10:39 AM

My only question would be whether the 200-500 is too long or too big a diameter for the large OpTech.  It is certainly worth picking up a 2 pack for the price and testing - worst case use that for your shorter lenses.  If it doesn't fit the 200-500, then I'd spend the $$ to get the fancier setup.  If not, I'd go OpTech or similar as they are much smaller and lighter.  I knew that even if the OpTech fit the 200-400, it would be very difficult to get on and off in a large part because of the diameter of the lens.  With shooting sports in pretty much any type of weather, I knew I had to spend the money so I actually got the rain cover so that it arrived before the 200-400 arrived!  It wasn't going out without available protection and I knew I'd want to get it out ASAP!

I bought some optech rain sleeves and they fit the 200-500 just barely. The only problem would be the collar mount is covered but that's perfectly fine.

#37110 Waterfall at Silver Falls, Oregon

Posted by asque2000 on 22 February 2016 - 08:14 AM

It's somewhat hard to give good critique without a full resolution photo. Perhaps consider uploading to a photo sharing site like Flickr so you can paste the BBCode in your post and it will present a full resolution image.

That said, I first want to say it seems soft (again likely a resolution issue). The water and foreground is nicely exposed, but the trees in the top corner are pretty dark. Perhaps consider boosting the shadows there to help pull that detail out. I like the color (I LOVE Oregon, I used to live there and I miss it terribly) but if it were me, and this is strictly a personal preference, I would try doing a longer exposure of the waterfall to that nice blurred/misty look to it.

All in all it's a great photo, and it's only making me miss Oregon even more.

#37109 Focus ?

Posted by asque2000 on 22 February 2016 - 08:06 AM

Could be a number of things. First make sure it's not your diopter on your viewfinder. If that is out of whack then your photos will come out blurry. If it were set to autofocus, it would be the opposite, your viewfinder would be blurry, but your photos would be crisp. Second, 1/250 is a pretty slow shutter speed, so it's possible that your photos were blurry just because of camera shake. It also could be glasses issue, though this is sort of related to the diopter. I would set it to autofocus for a bit and make sure the image is clear in the viewfinder before I went back to manual focus. I think with the D3300 if you have the switch on the lens set to "M" it will be entirely manual focus, the "Manual" setting on the camera is for complete control over shutter speed, ISO, aperture etc.

#36980 Something about it bugs me...

Posted by asque2000 on 15 February 2016 - 08:44 AM

I found a relevant snippet of information over at Nikonrumors...

"Stopping down: Sharpness, contrast and depth of field improves enough to be noticeable when stopped down to F8. There is no difference when stopped down to F6.3, some noticeable difference at F7.1 and clearly visible difference at F8. The picture of the kingfisher perched has details in the beak and face with appear sharper than images shot at F5.6."

The whole review here.

Interesting. Perhaps I'll try that. Thanks for the pointer, and thanks to everyone who offered critique, again I really appreciate it!

Here's a very cooperative American Robin taken today. I like how sharp it is (really digging the D7200!), but from some reason it is lacking. I can't really help the lighting as it was partly cloudy, but perhaps you fine folks could offer your opinions and critique, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Just thought i would drop a early file in from the P900,it was poor light and hand held at full zoom

Great photo! My two biggest gripes have been the poor lighting issue (which you've seem to bypass) and the slow processing, other than that it's been a fantastic camera! Here's my favorite shot I've taken with it.

Well it finally came! I got to play around with it a bit and I'm pretty impressed! I don't think it'll replace the DSLR anytime soon but it works. My only gripe (and I anticipated this) is that especially in continuous mode, it takes a while to process the shots. I have a Class 10 SD card, but perhaps purchasing one with faster read/write can improve that a bit. Here's a photo of a Chickadee I saw about 20-25 feet away.

#30175 My favorite shot so far!

Posted by asque2000 on 27 February 2015 - 07:41 AM

Here is my favorite birding photo.  It was shot with a Nikon D200, 18-200mm lens @ 200mm.  1/320 ISO 320 f/5.6. _SMD0212.JPG
