Merco explained it better

#39007 Macro - why oh why did I do it!

Posted by M.Beier on 22 May 2016 - 12:40 PM

I disagree with AF being terrible, zoom button in liveview does the magic imo.

But this method benefits a lot from monopod.

I use ISO 1600-6400 for macro outdoor...

But, I have not got much experience.

#38975 D800E vs. D5200 for DX

Posted by M.Beier on 21 May 2016 - 01:00 PM

D500 would be nice indeed, but the price, might buy second hand in a year+.

The spoiled part really sums it up. We all want more.

I went from M4/3, Panasonic GH1 w. 14-42 + 45-200(I recall) to D5200 w. 18-55 + 55-300 + 35mm prime summer 2014, spring 2015 I changed 55-300 to 70-200 2.8, never looked back....
This summer, 24-70,150-600,D800E and picking up 50 1.8 on 29th... Going to FX and 24-70 has been a desire for years, but it sure isnt same playing field as for price...
105 Micro I will borrow for pretty unlimited time from next month... Bringing home the 200 Micro (also to be collected 29th)

Camera is one way, only better, and No doubt my 50mm 1.8 will be swapped to 50mm sigma within a year O:)

It is all about making sure wife dont worry about the cost, especially while looking for house.

PS: GH1 was great for video, but if video matters, Sony...

#38709 D750 vs. D810

The metering modes are:

  • Spot meter. A 4 mm circle around the active focus point.
  • Centerweighted. The whole scene is metered, but with a bias for the center part. You can set the size of that central part with custom function b5.
  • Matrix. Often called multi-segment metering in books and magazines as every camera maker have their own name for it. The meter evaluates many small parts of the scene and compares it to a database to try to identify portrait, landscapes, backlit, etc and apply correction automatically.
You do use bracketing, it is just that you do it manually instead of letting the camera help out. Your three shots with varying compensation is exactly what the BKT function does.

BTW, where did the aquarium come from?
Went to oceanworld in Bangkok 2 days ago, I should have used spot weighted.

Your explaination is really good, will help me improve, thank you.

Regarding aquarium, most frame is suppose to be dark, it is the fish (in focus point) that I optimize for.

#38018 Selecting lens, advice

Posted by M.Beier on 15 April 2016 - 01:28 PM

Yup...Larger to smaller aperture, not number...

Just my thought...I had an older version of Nikon's 85 and I have the 105 Micro...I think they are close enough together that you probably don't need both...I chose the micro because it could be both a macro lens and a portrait lens...I would certainly love to own both at some point...I guess my thought is to pick one and make the other the last in your list of primes...

You've read my mind :)

Though I am will likely end up with the Nikon 50mm F1.8G instead, as it is 1/4th the price of Sigma, and it weights a lot less, is a lot smaller, I have a ton of filters for the size already.

My FX order is:
Tamron 70-200 F2.8 (already own this, replaced my DX 55-300 Nikon)

Tamron 24-70 F2.8

Tamron 150-600 F5-6.3 (or-)

Nikon 105mm F2.8 Micro

50mm prime (Sigma or Nikon)

Tamron 15-30 F2.8 (or-)

Nikon 85mm F1.8G

Somewhere within that list, probably around 50mm time, I also should get myself a flash.

Once again, sorry to jump all the time... As for 50mm, any do/don't in your book?

#37520 D750 vs. D810

Posted by M.Beier on 20 March 2016 - 10:56 AM

Im in a bit of a jam here, I was thinking of buying D750, however, the price gap from D750 to D810 in Taiwan is really insignificant, so I am considering D810 instead...

1) Any cons with D810, except for 5 vs. 6.5 FPS (which does not bother me*)

2) The -2 EV vs. -3 EV, how much does that mean, how low is the D810 really able to autofocus?

If I end up with D810, which CF should I get, I mean..... How fast does it have to be, not to become an issue for the cam?

Pardon my rookie questions, hope you can guide me on the right path.

#34864 Display(s) for sorting pictures

I ended up with a LG65UF772V

IPS, 4K 65", makes things a bit more relaxing.

#32780 Starting with 2 lenses on my DSLR. Please help

Posted by M.Beier on 05 September 2015 - 10:35 AM

Really need to mention which cam, in order for people to know if FX (not likely*), DX etc.

But I would suggest 18-55 + 55-300 for beginner... No they are not the best, but it is good for learning and gives a broad range....

#30673 Lowepro Runner 450 vs. china brand

Posted by M.Beier on 06 April 2015 - 05:31 AM

Thanks for all the advice guys.
I read what you all wrote, and considered it, then I ended up with the odd choice :)

Went for the China brand, because of the flipside - I think I'll appreciate that feature a lot, and it is simply something Lowepro in the given size does not offer. For my needs, the backpack option will work best, as its all around - though it will be a quite empty bagpack for a while, its nice not to feel low on capacity for a while.

Once again, thanks.

#30530 TAMRON 150-600mm DOES NOT DISAPOINT

Posted by M.Beier on 19 March 2015 - 01:23 PM

I think with any long reach telephoto lenses you have to get use to using different settings and higher shutter speeds for sharper images. Even with my nikon 80-400 when holding hand held and shooting at fast moving objects 1/1250 doesn't cut it. I use between 2500 to 3200 of a second shutter speed when capturing Hawks, Eagles, ext and my photos are razor sharp. When using 1/2000 I notice the picture are softer.

In my experience, 1/4000 for birds moving at high speed works, less, I start sensing blur, D5200.... Experience from 70-200 lens though, I imagine using the 150-600 (150-500*) won't allow slower :)

When shooting highspeed objects, one really has to sacrifice the low ISO.

I tried the 150-600 a little, but on a D7000, and I was impressed, its crazy handheld with VC, however moving objects, you really need high shutterspeed - and seems many are forgetting from reading the replies of the thread.

I've tagged you because I have a wish, a hope :)
Can you please do next batch in 500 focal, from what I read and see on youtube - anything above 500 won't benefit, even when crop at 500, you get sharper than 600.

I'd really appreciate your opinion on 500 on the tamron vs. 400 on the Nikkor. Hope you are up for it.

#30389 The new Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD

Posted by M.Beier on 12 March 2015 - 04:20 PM

I bought this lens a few weeks back, brought the sucker for zoo last weekend...
I'm still a rookie, however, this shot I convince myself that I can be proud of... Cropped lots and lots, however still sharp (Cropped from 6000x4000 to 3600x2400 ~36% of the DX frame)

*hmm struggling to get the picture up..

Hope I am not offending you, but are you sure it is the A009 model you have? The macro one isnt build for this purpose.

#29809 Oh hai!

Posted by M.Beier on 25 January 2015 - 11:01 AM

Hi, was browsing around for a community in my native language, however, that wasnt an option - yet I believe this will do the trick for me!

I've been into cams as hobby and amature work since 2013 of which I got my first M4/3 Panasonic GH1, I bought it for the video capabilities, however, it took less than half a year before I realised that I enjoyed taking pictures a lot more than videos, and swapped to NIKON D5200

I currently own:
D5200

18-55 VR kit lens

35mm F1.8 prime (DX)

55-300 DX

I am looking to go FX over next 18 months...

On my wishlist is

24-70 F2.8

70-200 F2.8

105mm micro

150-600 F5-6.3

D810

D7xxx (If NIKON manages to get P-MP up to 20p-mp)

Im here to learn which stuff will suit my needs, especially when to pick NIKON over Tamron - when not to cheapscate...

Here to adapt skills from more experienced users, hope for a good experience.

Cheers
