I'm going to start shooting in RAW without the extra JPEG copy. My memory cards are not that big.
I can get around 1.5K on my 32GB CF cards shooting just RAW. I carry 5 of them in my bag. That is a LOT of exposures, even on just one card.

Probably my Nikon 10-24mm f3.5-4.5 DX which is hardly ever off one of my two bodies. When I bought it, I wasn't sure I'd done the right thing but the amount of shots taken with it have justified its existence in my camera bag since then!

Thank you Thumper. That sounds like a good game plan - coursework and membership in a photography club. I think that people who are creative tend to want to share the experience with others.
That is exactly the experience that I had.

I got my start in classes at a local community college (back when it was film photography), which got me in with a local photography club. The nice thing about phtotgraphy clubs is the range of experience and skill. The club that I was involved in had members that were incredibly helpful, and they really enjoyed helping new photographers learn. It promotes and perpetuates the art.
