#66330 your best photo for week of aug 18-24 2019

Posted by dcbear78 on 20 January 2020 - 09:33 PM

Darryl, maybe I am not to reply in the topic, just post pictures but I have got to say that is awesome!

I have to ask and again maybe I am not suppose to, but was all this real ... the stars... is this the actual photo?  I see a bright light low on the horizon, is that Moon or city lights. I do realize you have some type of flash or lights for the couple. Would you explain the setup and after work if any that was done for this picture.

Thanks

Sorry. I don't make it back here as often as I used to.

It's a single shot. Shot with a Sony A7iii and 24mm f1.4 lens @ f1.4, 13 second exposure, ISO 1600. I also have a flash (Godox AD200) and softbox camera right, set to rear curtain sync. So at the end of the 13 second exposure it fires the flash, freezing the subjects in the foreground. I did ask them to stand very still during the 13 seconds. And that is why the pose is very static, so it is easier for them to hold that position.

The light you see in the background is a car that left where we were a minute or so before we took the shot. We had to move off the road to let them through.

And becasue this one is a single exposure and the focus is on them, at f1.4 the stars aren't perfectly focused. Here is my final photo, which has blended two exposres together. Prior to taking this photo I set the camera up and was taking a timelapse of the stars. So I pulled one of those photos out and combined it with this one for the final image I delivered.

#62657 Your Best Photo, Week Ending 9 June 2019

Posted by dcbear78 on 03 June 2019 - 10:09 PM

Whilst I took this photo ages ago I am presenting it now, because why not. Was the last shoot I did with my Nikon. And I stuffed up and shot it in jpeg because the previous shoot I had done required jpegs and I never checked my camera as I had spent all my time playing with my new Sony gear. What is worse was it was medium sized jpeg so didn't get the full benefit of that high resolution sensor.

D810 with Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro. Probably about f13 or more. With Godox AD600 and a white beauty dish for lighting.

#62656 Recent Wedding Photos

Posted by dcbear78 on 03 June 2019 - 10:01 PM

Hi... Since selling off my Nikon kit I guess I don't visit these parts as much as I once did. Although I still enjoy lurking from time to time, I just don't have much Nikon relevent stuff to add. But thought I might share some photos from a recent wedding. All shot with Sony A7iii and either 35mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.4 (and maybe a 55mm f1.8).

Sorry for the large images, I have given up on Flickr so I am linking these direct from my website, so they will not get resized. I think the forum software will make sure they aren't too big?

#58393 Flickr Changes

Posted by dcbear78 on 02 November 2018 - 11:30 PM

I'm a bit unsure myself. I used to use Flickr quite a lot in my Pentax Forums days where it was far more active. I no longer use it as much now as I am shooting more for clients. But I did find it a handy online repository of my photos. A while ago I cancelled my paid subscription. Going forward I am not sure what I want to do other than I know I won't be paying for it.

The cynic in me says this is just Smugmug slowly killing it off to drive more customers to their primary business.

#58277 Adobe Creative Cloud 2019

PC is far and away a cheaper option, with considerably higher level options with a much longer potential lifespan due to upgradability. Additionally, with iMac's being an all in one device, you need to suffer the costs of replacing the whole system should something go wrong, not just the individual component (why do I need to replace my CPU because the monitor failed?) Apple source ultra cheap, mass-produced components, whereas with a PC if you want, you can have specialised, very high-quality components should you want to.

This price per dollar performance is multiplied the higher specifications you want to go. There are many, many examples on Youtube of creators ditching Apple because of this ridiculous situation.

Lastly the whole "Mac's are more reliable" thing seems to not be as true as it once was. Every update of either MacOS or Adobe breaks the other. Not once do I see such problems for PC users. Also, windows as a future subscription model is not exactly true. In fact, they have recently gone the other way when they gave everyone on W7 and W8 a free upgrade to W10.

Ultimately it comes down to what operating system you prefer and how much you are willing to pay for that preference.

#58087 Help me choose a FX DSLR for Sports

Posted by dcbear78 on 10 October 2018 - 08:53 AM

In order...

D850 > D500 >D810 > D750

The D750 might sound good but it has a terrible buffer. The D810 has a much-improved buffer but not so great at high ISO's. The D500 is better at high ISO than the D810 even though it is a crop sensor (I own both). Both D500 and D850 have the same focus system, which is from the D5 and superior to the D750. And the D850 is probably the best DSLR you can buy right now. The detail and the cropping ability make this an even better choice than a D5 IMO.

1st I don't have your camera so forgive me if this is a silly question. The 850 has a Crop Mode would shooting in Crop Mode cause the problem you are having?

Not, that would actually solve the problem, but introduce other problems like not using the camera to its potential

Are you using filters? If so what kind?

Is the hood on correctly?

Can you post an example?

#58078 Another Wedding

Posted by dcbear78 on 09 October 2018 - 10:30 PM

Shot back to back weddings the last couple weeks, which is good as my wedding business is finally starting to take off. This one was an older couple in their 60's. They had an amazing blended family that was so cohesive, I was envious, I want to be a part of their family too. The refused to get photos of each side's family separately. They said they are one family and will get all of their photos together. The also didn't want much as far as posed formal photos, instead preferring photos of their friends and family.

Looks like you're having a nice early Summer down there!

It is summer year round here. Very, very rare to see single digit temperatures in my area. Even right now it is 3am and 17°C.

Shot my first wedding with my new pair of Sony A7iii's on the weekend. Also my first time shooting completely with primes, in this case a 35mm and 85mm.

#57823 Gladstone Marina

Posted by dcbear78 on 25 September 2018 - 05:34 AM

With my move to Sony, I actually picked up a Sony A6500 with 18-135mm lens for my daughter. So I have been taking her out and teaching her some techniques and last week we did some sunset/dusk landscapes. I gave my new Sony A7iii a test while I was there.

I only have a limited lens range at this stage (and hoping to keep it that way). Regardless, I prefer to do these shots as stitched panoramas anyway. But this was done with my Sony Zeiss 35mm f1.4 lens.

Sony A7iii with Sony Zeiss 35mm f1.4 @ f16, 20s, ISO 50 x 3 images stitched in post.

The white lights on the right are predominantly from a coal export terminal. You can also see the stacks of a power station to the left.

#57747 Discussion on Tamron lenses, AF performance, and Tap-in

Posted by dcbear78 on 22 September 2018 - 04:48 AM

do all third party lens need to be calibrated to camera or some of them. i have 150-600 first gen 150-600mm love it.

From my experience all lenses, regardless of what name is written on the side, require it to some degree.

I was wondering why you were still shooting with the D810--then I saw your explanation.  How's the Sony treating you? Those are gorgeous images by the way--I'd be very interested in knowing your lighting setup for both, but especially the first. Stunning.

Thanks. Both natural light (which I ironically do a lot more of now I own a fortune in lighting lol). First one is really strongly backlit. You can see the flaring across her face. Most other shots I took here were unusable. The second one just had a sliver of light coming through and I placed her with her face in it, hoping to get that contrasty street photography kind of look.

I haven't really given the A7iii a real good run yet. I've done a few test shots of my daughter and LOVING the eye autofocus! I have a wedding to shoot next weekend so it will get it's first real run there (with my Nikon's in backup just in case). I am still waiting for the second A7iii. I was really hoping I'd have it by this wedding, but unless I get lucky this week, I am thinking I will still be using one of my Nikon's. Just not sure which one yet?
