#58089 PSA: Beware of Focus Camera

Posted by ScottinPollock on 10 October 2018 - 12:01 PM

I wanted to post an update to this...

I was recently contacted by the manager of Focus Camera customer service regarding my posting of this experience on Yelp. She has apologized for my experience with their company and has issued me a refund of $150.00 ($70 more than their initial valuation).

She also remarked that there would be some "conversations" with upper-management of the Used Department so this kind of thing will not happen going forward.

I had planned to also send a certified letter to the CEO of Focus Camera recanting my first experience with their company. Would that have received the same result as the Yelp review? Possibly... I know I have achieved similar results in the past.

It's unfortunate that corporate America hasn't learned from Jeff Bezos about empowering the people in the trenches to look after the customer, and that this kind of escalation is all too often required.

In any event, I wanted you all to know that my escalation of this issue has resulted in Focus Camera doing more than what was right in the end.

#57906 Custom built

Posted by sunshine on 28 September 2018 - 09:59 AM

My son has a company that builds custom motorcycles.  I provide photos for his web site and for customers.  Here are a few shots of his latest build, completed this week.  This bike started life as a Yamaha XV920 Virago.  It now has front suspension and brakes from a BMW, Honda 5-spoke rims, Suzuki GSX-R rear shock, gas tank from a 1970s Suzuki "water buffalo" 750cc 2-stroke, and lots of custom made parts.  The ignition and electrical system has been updated with a unit from Moto Gadgets that can be controlled from a smart phone via blue tooth.  The phone acts as the proximity key and turns on the system when you get close.  And if you forgot your phone, it also includes a traditional key switch hidden under the gas tank.  This is the third "Scout" that he has built.

#57678 Ryten mountain

Posted by marat stepanoff on 18 September 2018 - 02:26 PM

One of the most beautiful tracks on the Lofoten Islands is the hiking on Ryten mountain. I described in my article the route through the Kvalvika beach. If you plan to go there you can check the itinerary here.

I know the week isn't over yet, but I like this one.  Really looking forward to working with this new lens in good light.  It's been cloudy and gray for days here.

#57086 Engagement Photos!

Posted by labailey on 20 August 2018 - 07:08 PM

Hello!

I just thought I'd share a few photos from a portrait shoot that was done a few days ago. The lucky lady in the photos is me! My now fiancé put his college friend up to taking the photos!

She sent me the RAW files and I edited them after the fact. :)

I took the closeup photos of the ring with my trusty Nikon D5000 and kit lens!

#56639 New website

Posted by Malice on 03 August 2018 - 12:53 PM

Movin' on... ;-)

For whatever reason, clicking on the "clients" header opens up a new tab. On top of that this area doesn't seem to be finished, yet. Most of the categories there lead basically to the same galleries.

You know, I'm really impressed by most of your work, so please don't get me wrong. But in my opinion you might want to think about getting the descriptions on the "about" page an overhaul. The way it's written it sounds a little if you started with your "hobby" and try to make some money off of it now. Just don't mention the years/dates. Saying you've been into photography for years and been doing this and that for quite some time now, will probably be precise enough and leave some room for the imagination of the readers.

Another thing that probably most readers won't pick up on, but since I noticed, I'm mentioning it: with your wedding packages you offer to have a second photographer around, but on the "about" page, you describe Crew One as a one man show. On the surface that appears to be a bit contradictory. I know, you also talk about networks on the website, but again, I'm not sure every potential client will pick up on that. So maybe it might be a good idea to make this a bit easier to grasp. You'll also want to reassure your clients that the secondary photographer will also be top notch and not just somebody/anybody tagging along.

And as a last remark for the moment, your contact form includes a list of topics you can support clients with. The list is much longer than what you are featuring on the site for the time being. So, in terms of building your reputation a little or strengthening your claim that you actually *are* capable of helping people with problems in all these fields, you might want to have something to show for yourself in that regard. Getting the approval to post this stuff online might admittedly be difficult, but I think some diversity in types of photography you can do, might be a plus in demonstrating your skills overall and in this way - again -  reassure potential clients that they've come to the right address to find a solution for their problems.

Edit:

Since you've mentioned the mobile side of things and I just had a look on your website with my phone and (to over-dramatize a little) I hardly recognized the site. The focus appears to be totally different. At first glance it seems your much more invested in portrait shooting and are especially skilled in post production... i.e. it's a bit confusing.

Also: on my tiny iPhone SE, the menu item to open the categories of the page are half hidden behind the Crew One banner.

And I get the same oversized text there for "Platinum" and "Photos & Video" (Safari on iOS 11.4.1) in the weddings section.

#55586 How to get B/G blur

Posted by leighgion on 28 May 2018 - 02:41 AM

Daryl/DCbear has covered the technical aspects very completely. I’ll just reinforce that your particular combination of lens and space isn’t ideal to get a soft background. You can’t open up the aperture very wide or get the background very far away.

If you have money to throw at the issue, getting a fast prime like the 50mm 1.8G would help a lot and not require you to change your studio space.
