#31015 Your Best Photo, Week Ending 3 May 2015

My effort.... I did a TFP shoot with a young model yesterday. The brief from the agency was to make it fun, not serious and to reflect her age. She wanted to do a nerdy/preppy kind of theme. This is the first image that really stood out to me.

I made my first real attempt at an HDR image this week…heh. Hope it doesn't hurt anyone's eyes. :) (I've bracketed before, but I usually end up liking one of the bracketed images and manipulating it in Lightroom rather than stacking.)

My husband and I are taking an astrophotography class at the University of Utah--last week we spent a good chunk of one night up on the roof of the physics building in the observatory getting a telescope and camera set (we shot M51, AKA the Whirlpool Galaxy…hoping to have it processed and ready to show in a few days). We had a great view of the valley up there, so I was glad to have my regular old DSLR with me. I didn't have my tripod with me, and I was bracketing manually, so I wasn't sure how well the stack would work. I used Nik's HDR Efex, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it aligned!

This is three images stacked…you can see the Great Salt Lake off in the distance, as well as the Salt Lake International Airport and the Utah Capitol Building.

This turned out better than I thought it was going to. I had this idea in my head on what I wanted to achieve but after taking the initial shots I didn't think I had it. But upon processing up the shot I have pretty much achieved what I was hoping for.

I've moved on from dripping shots... and the next month will be reflections/shiny objects. Below was my favorite from today, hoping to get some outdoor stuff tomorrow... as it's very wet out.

EDITED to add an updated image below...

Beautiful images this week! Nice work, folks.

I've finally gotten back to my Project 52 Pros work after missing about six assignments. The Project is drawing to a close, and I'm determined to finish! The assignment was to shoot an album cover for a band and the theme was One Red Balloon. So…imagine me dragging all my light stands and speedlights and umbrellas out to the woods along with a model from Brazil who is not quite used to our cold Utah winters (though this winter has been particularly mild). From the beginning I had envisioned a glowing red balloon in the dark woods, and it took quite a few tries to figure out how to get the balloon to glow (all this was done ahead of time, of course). Finally bought some glowing balloons from Walmart, ha ha…and then I still had to add a flashlight to help it along. Anyhow, it didn't quite turn out the way I had envisioned it, and it's still a work in progress in need of a bit more processing, but this is what I have so far. I haven't posted any photos for the last couple of weeks, so I wanted to get one in tonight.

D600, Nikkor 85mm, f/2.8, 1/100, ISO 3200, two Yongnuo 560 III speed lights off camera on stands with umbrellas at 1/128 each…and the  flashlight, of course. And that's a real oil lantern she's holding.

UPDATE: I've been tinkering in PS with this image and added a bit of glow around the lantern and the balloon and added some fog  (courtesy of a new PS brush from Aaron Nace--so cool!). I'm hoping it gives it more of a unified and textured look...and I'm hoping I didn't overdo it… I've never done either of those things in PS before.

And here's another image from the same shoot--different lens (24-70), so the balloon looks pretty far away...

I probably shouldn't have posted these before I received my critique from my mentor...

I have set myself a task for 2015 to shoot something different each month, inspired by the project 52 concept. I've been creating myself a list of things to try and then breaking the ideas down into detail before I ven turn the camera on. origionally I had planned to do smoke for January and had an amaizing idea - which required certain elements unavailable to me at this moment, so it got pushed. Instead today I worked on the subject of pouring, or in this case dripping.

16248029992_089b220f2d_c.jpg20150110-_DSC0191 by mr_leeman, on Flickr

Simple set-up, glass vase with window to one side and a lamp to the other, black and white card to altenate backdrop. I got together a whole bunch of pouring devices and various liquids to try out. I settled after a batch of test shots, that my son's bath toy/siv worked well for pouring as it had very fine holes, meaning the viscous liquids had to settle first. This allowed me to get in position and fire. The prefered liquids were Glycerine and food colouring, and handwash in a squirty tub. I took around 1000 shots and it was really hard to throw any away, each one being unique. I narrowed down several favorites and then chose the above to share. Very fun, and I actually learned from it. Tri-pod, with manual focus got the best results.  Next week I'm trying paint/ink and a few others - plus I may try this set-up again with what I learned. If time permits!

Second shot, bit of fun again. A toy dinsoaur I was playing with, ended up looking like it's final moments when the comet struck!

Love the contrast, alden!   :)

I'm in early this week. Been shooting a bit more for the cookbook--last night we did a pizza margherita. Pretty good…love it with a bit of balsamic vinegar drizzled over it. Saturday looks to be an all-day shoot for the cookbook--the author has been out of the country and is now anxious to get back to work. Hope I survive, heh heh.

D600, Nikkor 85mm, f/3.2, 1/20, ISO 200, flash in softbox behind and to the left, white cards on right and in front. Would have preferred natural light, but we lose it so early these days!

This is a reshoot--first shoot I learned the hard way that basil is not to trifled with. It is not to be baked or cut too early if you want it looking at all green and appealing. :)
