#24787 Need help picking a 35mm body

Posted by Patrick9 on 23 July 2014 - 07:24 PM

I got the lens a 55mm f3.5 for pennies.  It is filthy and a spot of fungus. I plan on trying to get it up and working. It is a non AI lens at the moment. from the pictures I was sent. I figure I can't lose. If I succeed I have a lens. If I don't it was money spent on an education. This is more of an See if I can project. I will Probably modify it. I have the tools, and I have had to modify off brand lenses to fit some of my Pentax bodies. This should be a lot of fun..

#24742 A new grip

First I want you all to know I do photography as a hobby primarily. I have sold a few and been published. I tend not to take myself too seriously..  That said I thought I would debut the new grip on my 105mm lens

Thru the Fe using the 24/2.8   has been dropped off at the lab. I got the seals replaced last night late. I am curious to see how the seals did ,and how well the camera and lens performed Also  how accurate the meter is. Now the wait.

For its debut I took it to a Bluegrass festival / car show in town

#24054 Now officially a Nikon film shooter.. almost

The adapters with a lens in them can work well, if the glass is good in the lens. Adapters without a lens lose infinity focus.

The cheaper alternatives to the classic 35 and 50 are quite nice too, and less temperamental in use.

The 50/1.8 was made in several versions over the years, the Series E or the short AIS are the sharpest in the corners of the manual focus ones and are the same optical formula as the AF version but with a nicer feel when focusing.

The 35/2 AI or AIS are very much better than the later AF lens. The AI has a longer focus throw than the AIS, they are both the same old 8 elements in 6 groups that was introduced in 1965, but with the AI coupling on the aperture ring. The 35/2.5 Series E is a workable substitute until one finds one of the better, faster lenses.

That is good to know. I have a Tamron 90 macro, as well as a couple of other M Pentax lenses I would like to be able to use on these bodies

A 50 is probably next on my list.

So far I have the 105/2.5 working as it should and the scale along with all the numbers clean and the colors in the scale and numbers look good. Now for a grip on the focus ring and It will be ready. the 24/2.8 is clean but still  just a  tad stiff.  The Fm2 body is clean now as well. I think I am going to replace the seals and mirror bumper then It should be ready for a roll of film. The mirror bumper shed a little while I was cleaning the mirror. The mirror was filthy.

#23996 Now officially a Nikon film shooter.. almost

I have an FE that looks almost new from the photo's I saw of it. I also made an offer on a FM2 with 2 lenses. It was accepted so I now have them. They need a good cleaning on the outsides but the glass and view finder are clear and clean  the meter works, and the seals look to be in good shape. I just need to replace the rubber on the focus ring of the 105 f 2.5 and free up the aperture ring on it and on the 24 f 2.8.  The feel a bit gummy or stiff when turning. The blades snap when the lever is moved so I think it is just the rings. I am hoping I don't need to disassemble the lenses to get the rings cleaned up.

I hopefully can shoot a roll thru both bodies by this week end. Then the almost will be gone :)

I looked at an Fm2 today It was dirty but working Has 2( A 28, and 105 manual lenses) lenses both need cleaning and the 105 needs a grip replaced as it is missing. I am not to fond f the meter read out but I could live with it. The lady inherited it and is selling it. I think for its condition she is asking too much. I made an offer and waiting to here back. I am still going to get a different body I think

What lenses will you be using?

I don't have anyglass for Nikon any longer since that episode I mentioned earlier. So I will have to get a couple. All my lenses are Pentax K, KA,KAF mounts. Right now I shoot mostly 28-135 lengths . I do have longer and wider just those seem to be where I shoot most of the time.

Nice of you to give it back, I wouldn't have after I'd already spent the time tinkering.  It's not kind to waste your time over $25, and a deal is a deal.  Good luck with your selection.

I told him to never mind as customers walked in.I was not in a good mood . He left $20 with my receptionist for me. So he ruined his name with a lot of people over $5. I just decided to try to get a better body that had a cleaner view finder and let someone better than me handle it. I did consider just handing him a check an not the camera. but decided not to

I do wear glasses so can be  important. I am not big on fully automatic so FA may be out. That almost narrowed it down till I add back in to look for an F4 . It looks like it has most of what I look  for. I tend to use Av mode the most with the occasional Tv mode and on very rare occasions  Auto. I do use AF on my cameras that have it .Just not all the time, and manually focus the most.

Even tho I have 4 35mm Pentax bodies the one I use the most is an Old K-1000. Fully manual  The  FM's remind me of it. The FE's remind me of the second most used body my P30t. so either of them appear to be a good fit as well as the f4.  Maybe I just need to get one of each :)

Thanks for the information that is really helpful.

#23779 New here

Well I assume I have the K series lenses. I will check the 28 tomorrow. The 80-200 has a  bit of dirt on the inner elements and a small spot of what look like pin pricks. Sort of like a small galaxy. about the size of an infants small finger print. and a fair bit of zoom creep.   The 28 looks new ,and  other than the inner element spot and dust the zoom looks new . The 50 looks to be in good shape with  a bit of dirt on the letters and scale.

 Thanks for the welcome.

So far so good. I got my first roll back today. I am used to split screen focus screen  but the meter not working a large part of the time A few of my shots exposures were off. since I shot that roll I have done a lot more cleaning still more to go. Everything seems to be funtioning and the meter stays on and the leds on top are now working as well. I am tickled. I don't feel so bad adout spending the money. The first roll was just a test. Family shots. I bought a roll of 400tx to run thru it next. Hopefully I will have something worth showing out of it.
