If you swap lenses do you still see the same difference in clarity?

Hmm, I'll check that in a bit. Going through the pics I took this afternoon, so laptop in my lap, dog laying across my legs lol.

Today I stopped to shoot on my break and took both bodies with me. The 810 with 150-600, and D5 with 70-200. Crossed black Rapids. Something really stood out as I was swapping back and forth that I hadn't really noticed until today, possibly because it was overcast. The clarity through the viewfinder on the D5 is so much clearer than the 810. I would pay money to have that replaced in the 810.

Yea, your best bet would be to find a cheap, broken, used one, and "empty" it yourself

#38264 Switching to Nikon and need some help with lenses...

Posted by OTRTexan on 01 May 2016 - 12:37 AM

Most people have already chimed in, but I have to say, I really like the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary better than the Tamron. At 600mm, the Sigma is pretty good across the whole lens and the Tamron is super soft in the mids and corners. I also got my Nikkor 85/1.8 for $400, on one of their periodic sales.

I've never shot the Sigma, however I've owned and shot thousands of frames through the Tamron for awhile now, and have to disagree with it being soft anywhere. Now, admittedly I shoot mainly wildlife with it and usually crop pretty tight so that the edges are a non factor. But I went back and looked at full images and didn't find this to be the case. I've also not had any issues shooting at 600mm. I think that most people getting soft images at 600 are trying to shoot hand held on a DX body. This lens focal length, be it Sigma or Tamron, takes some getting used to.

#38237 Nikon Refurbished Lenses--Worth it?

Posted by OTRTexan on 28 April 2016 - 06:34 AM

From my understanding, a refurbished lens actually goes through a more stringent quality control check vs a brand new one. Refurbished lenses are checked out thoroughly by a technician whereas new ones coming off the line are not.

#38231 Using a 12-24 mm on D800 (or D810)

Posted by OTRTexan on 27 April 2016 - 12:17 PM

So, I'll just throw this out there, even though it's actually a little heavier than the 14-24. But I really love my Tamron 15-30 on my 810. The reviews I read on it before I bought it were fantastic, and it's lived up to them all. I shoot on a tripod mostly with it, so weight isn't normally an issue.

#38097 D750 vs. D810

With my 810, I use single point for everything but birds in flight, especially if I'm shooting at the long end of my glass. Then I switch to 9 pt.

This weekend with the D5, I had better luck shooting 25pt when I was shooting basketball.

A - as I recall, the front dial changes between the amount of focus points while the back button changes between AF-S and AF-C, etc...Not sure about displaying the available points...

This is correct. As far as displaying the focal points in your viewfinder, you can turn them on in the custom settings menu. I can give you the exact place later when I can get to my camera

So the tourney is over, and I've gone through and sorted out the decent shots out of over 6,000 images. 90% of them were dead on focus wise, which is a huge improvement over trying to shoot basketball with my 810. Equally impressive was the fact that I did it all on one battery, which not only held up throughout the tourney, but also for test shots the day before and some playing around during the week. I'm pretty sure I put a fresh charge on it Monday, and did some shooting through the week, then the tournament. Fantastic battery life. I think for basketball I'm going to have to switch to a 24-70 however, vs the 70-200, when I'm shooting under the basket like I was today. At 70mm, it's very hard to get everything in the frame when they are on top of me. I was going to bring my 810 with the 50mm for that reason, but I don't have a dual camera harness yet and wearing both crossed was very uncomfortable. Maybe if I get a head for my monopod, but I don't see how that will work either since I can't really drop the monopod to pull up the second body. I ended up shooting a lot in portrait mode since basketball is so vertical.

I've only culled with a couple of exceptions, so will try to get some editing done in the next day or two and post some shots.

If it's the same as the 810, you can change the af pattern the same as changing from single or continuous focus, except you rotate the front command wheel.

First two games in the books. I shot both in 25 pt af just to give it a good chance. I won't get to look at the images till later today, but the little bit of chimping I did, I think it went well. I was parked under the basket for most of it, so players coming right at me. If these come out well, I doubt I'll change anything for tomorrow. Almost filled the first card (64 gb) during the first game, and I slowed down because of it. I'm going to have to buy some 128's I think. Started off in auto ISO and manual, but set my ISO at 10k at half time. It will be interesting to see what worked best.

#38022 Accuracy of auto focus methods

Posted by OTRTexan on 15 April 2016 - 04:58 PM

Spent some time today with my dog Rowdy and his tennis ball, trying out different autofocus modes. Now this is on a bright sunny day, so it may vary depending on lighting conditions, but I seemed to have better luck with the Group mode. Nikon suggests using the 25 pt mode for sports. Tomorrow I'll be shooting some basketball and will see how that goes. I'll likely shoot in different modes per game to see what works best. Shooting a single dog and his ball outside will be different than a group of players inside. But from what I got today, I'm going to start with group. It seemed to be faster when he was running at me. I didn't try 3D however, which may be better with subjects coming at me. May give that a go tomorrow.

I know, it's crazy. It wasn't just a little price drop, it was a price landslide. Just imagine what their profit margins were before this...

Looks like xqd card price has dropped dramatically too. I paid $100 each for those 2933x's at 64 gb. B&H has been back ordered for awhile now, but I found a place in California that had some at the same price.
