#40245 Opinions please

I like the background...every part of it screams rodeo to me....Depending on the full image, I might do as you suggested with cropping to include "some" of the judge - enough to make it obvious he's on the horse and that the judge is watching the ride...Officials are part of the "game" too, so I wouldn't be worried about including him or at least a part of him...must have been a good ride if he stayed up...I've seen many hats fly off, but don't remember their numbers ever flying off...

Only 4000? You're slipping :)

The original shot was much wider as I was in the other side of the arena. I had 7 or 8 frames with his number and hat in the air, but this is the only one that clearly said Rodeo. I really loved that aspect of the shot. The new tighter version makes that pop out a little more, which was the reason for the landscape shot. But, like y'all, I didn't like cutting out so much of the horse.

I'm really trying to be less shutter happy, but finding trying to be selective, I'm missing things. It's going to take some work.

How would it look if you used a red filter effect in the monochrome conversion? A lighter text on the judge's back and the rider's leg coupled with a darker grass border and trees could work. The new crop is definitely more pleasing.

No laptop access right now, playing in LR mobile. What do you think of a sepia version?

So here are two different versions. Different crop in both color and black and white.

I shot a rodeo last weekend and as I was going through the 4k images I shot, I found this one. I cropped it two different ways. Obviously the hat and Rodeo tag are what makes it unique, but the judge being in the way makes it hard to 'judge'.  I really want the rodeo and hat to stand out, but to me, the tighter crop missing most of the horse, gives me problems. What do y'all think?

One of my favorite images lately. Spent an hour taking shots of this juvenile bald eagle in Idaho. He finally got bored with me and flew off. I was hoping he'd stay till the sun dropped farther, but still like the way this turned out. It made for some difficult exposure where he was since he was in the shade of a tree on half of him, with the bright sun on the other.

I have one of the expeditions and love it. I bought it a couple of years ago, when I was at the B&H showroom. Now I can't pack all of my gear in it and have been looking to add a larger bag for when I want to take everything. I'll be very interested to see how you like it once it's packed

#39880 Small rant

Posted by OTRTexan on 19 June 2016 - 08:01 PM

I agree, American rodeo is all about respect, honor and tradition.  Very family orientated.  Even the little bitty rodeos.  It really upsets me when I see people on their cell phones when hats are off and heads bowed.  No respect for the event or the person being honored.  That mans family deserved a photo of his being paid respect from the organization.

The sad part is, I didn't shoot this at all, assuming the paid photographer would be. She was standing past me in the arena, and I only noticed the infraction, after it was by me and had no shot. I was standing there, hat in hand, as it went by where I was standing.

I started going through some of my photos from there tonight, and noticed her standing in the background, multiple occasions, either looking at her phone, or at the back of her camera, when the action was going on. I'd be shocked if she came out with many decent images at all. Once I get a decent amount of mine sorted and edited, I plan on sending a link to the rodeo association that held it. I had several spectators come up and ask me for my website during the rodeo. I told the first one that I wasn't the photographer, I was doing this for me. She asked who the photographer was and I pointed her out. I shot the next rider with the lady standing beside me. After he was done, she said the paid photographer didn't take a single shot, and asked for my website again, so I obliged. Had several others come up and ask as the rodeo went on.

Honestly, I have to wonder if the other photographer was even getting paid at all. She may of just volunteered to do it, because she didn't seem like she cared one way or the other. Irregardless, if you take a job, paid or not, you should at least try.

#39848 Small rant

Last night I stopped and shot a small rodeo. I'd contacted the people putting it on a couple of days before I got there to make sure I could bring my gear, and possibly to get a little freedom. They told me I was welcome to bring whatever I wanted, but they'd already hired a photographer, and since it was a small arena, they had limited space. All well and good, I didn't want to step on anyone's toes.

I got there a couple of hours early and did some scouting and found a good place to set up. This ain't my first rodeo, so I knew what to expect. First to shoot, not first to attend or be a part of. The rodeo started at 7:30 pm, still an hour and a half of light before they turn the arena lights on. The official photographer shoes up with a D5xxx and a pair of kit lenses. She'll be fine, until it gets dark. Now, I don't know if this is her first rodeo or not, but where she shot from most of the night, it possibly was.

That's fine. I'm sure she got some good shots. But now for my rant. For those of you who have never been to a rodeo, it's steeped in honor and tradition. Respect is huge. During the opening ceremonies, they had what's called a missing rider formation. A couple of weeks prior, one of the long time rodeo judges from the area, had passed away. So they draped a US flag over the saddle of his horse, and circled the arena with a moment of silence. As the horse goes around the arena, spectators stand, remove hats, and silently watch the horse go around. The official photographer however, had her back turned to the horse, and was using her cell phone.

So my point is, if you are being paid to shoot an event, respect the event and its traditions.

Did a late senior shoot this weekend. I was showing the set to the friends and family and someone made the statement that I must have a nice camera. The grandmother immediately said, It takes more than a nice camera to get great pictures! Thank you Ma'am! Really enjoyed shooting these, it was last minute so I didn't have any lighting with me and it was overcast and raining off and on throughout the shoot. Still had a great time.

#38978 AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR

Not the VR version. I did look at it, but couldn't justify losing IQ to gain VR. Apparently I didn't look close enough at the thread title to see that this was about the new VR model, and it had been awhile since I read the original posts. Didn't re-read them before posting.

Just picked up a Nikon version from KEH for $1350 in Like New condition. Saved $450 compared to a new one, sacrificing the Nikon warranty. The lens was in mint condition, and all seems to be working fine. Hoping that any issues it has mechanically will show in the first 6 months.

I went back and forth between this and the Tamron for a long time. The reports of onion bokeh in the Tamron were what pushed me to Nikon. And at this price, it's not much more than a new Tamron.

Kenafein, I plan on buying this focal length in the next week or two, and of course debating between Nikon and Tamron. My concern with the Tamron is that I've read it has an onion bokeh. Have you seen this, or shot anything that might show this?

#38732 I don't believe this is noise, so what is it and how do I get rid of it?

Most star trail images you see are actually many separate exposures, usually about 30 sec each, stacked on each other using software.

#38731 What software do you use for editing video from your Nikon

I use the photography package from Adobe that gives you Lightroom and Photoshop for $10 a month.

So, ignore this, I so missed the video part...

It's definitely the D5. It's noticeably brighter with both lenses,
