Setting the center point

03 August 2014 - 09:34 PM

Am I missing something?  When I set the center point for focus, I don't see any way I can get it to stay put.  Since it is on the same dial as when I review my pics in review mode, if it accidentally gets on the wrong screen it moves my point.  I do not want to have to check to make sure it is in the center every time I take a shot.  I have enough decisions to make and don't want to have one more thing to check when all I want to concentrate on is composition.  I tried to find more info on this in the manual and could not find it.  This frustrates me very much.  Can anyone help me with this?

Nothing new under the sun?

08 July 2014 - 03:47 PM

I just had to throw this one out there.  I found it particularly amusing when my art Professors put up a fuss about me choosing to do photography as my senior thesis when I graduated last year.  They were all younger than I am and they told me that everything in photography has already been done.

Mind you, this is a highly regarded liberal arts college.  It is just one of those things that makes me go hmmmm.   ;)

A backpack that is small enough

29 June 2014 - 12:16 AM

Ok, I think I am done buying cameras and lenses for awhile, so now I am looking for a backpack.  I really wish I lived close to a large store like Adorama or B+H, so I could just go try them all out.  I am losing money sending them back.  So far I have tried Lowpro and Vanguard.  I would really like something that conforms comfortably on my back and small, very small.  I only really need it to hold one or two camera bodies and one or two lenses.  I don't care if it has a ton of padding, just a little is fine.  I like to travel light and when I am on a major expedition I have my hubby to help carry things.  I usually have at least one, and maybe two, cameras on my Cotton Carrier, ready at all times.   Right now I only have a small Lowpro shoulder bag, that I never carry on a hike.

If I ever find the perfect bag, I will certainly sing its praises.

Nikon D5300, first impressions from a Canon user

22 June 2014 - 07:31 PM

Well I tried out my new D5300 for the first time and I have quite a long list of design annoyances. But for one thing, and this is not just Nikon, I don't like reading the manual on the computer screen.  The paper copy is far too basic.  I figured that if the image quality was good, it might be worth it to get used to all the little things I don't like about it.  But then I opened my first RAW images, and right away I see a spot on the sensor.  This should not happen with a brand new camera.  I had heard that Nikon has issues with oil spots on the sensor.  Here is the image and a close crop.  What are your thoughts?  Should I send it back for repair/replacement?Attached File  _DSC0115.jpg   70.12KB   463 downloadsAttached File  _DSC0115crop.jpg   445.63KB   445 downloads

Clueless

26 May 2014 - 10:28 AM

I posed this question in the Canon Forums and never got a single response.  I would like to know if anyone can give me a clue as to why the work of this photographer has drawn so much attention.  Please give me some insight into what makes his work so outstanding, so that I may employ those principals in my own work so that I can gain some attention too.
