#19762 Help me with this chocolate shoot?

Posted by Mr_Leeman on 23 April 2014 - 02:56 AM

Oh cake... definately cake. I hope to god you don't photogrpah the other... I've heard of taking a crap photo but not photo's of it.

Composition is my biggest flaw and I tend to rush shots, but then again I'm mainly shooting my son who rarely keeps still. At work I do shoot product shots and currently we need to set up a better lit area, we get no natural light in my department - very frustrating!

Just read some of the other comments, and I'd agree about the DOF too.

Pun alert - You make it look like a peice of... I won't go there.

I think the lighting is fine and all I'd do is punch the the exposure slightly. In terms of layout I think the balance isn't working for me. The bottom of the three has the best height/angle and I think the cake pointing to the right with the cup on the far left could have worked, so the cake isn't distracted by anything behind it. The fork leads me out the shot, so perhaps could have been entrely visbale or not in at all. Another option would have been to try it with a peice on the fork, leading towards the camera, and the cake behind. Overall though they're good shots, just putting my pennies worth in.

Nice 'work'!

#19145 Flash Gun

Posted by Mr_Leeman on 16 April 2014 - 06:26 AM

Hi All

I'm at a point where I no longer want to rely (if I ever could) the pop-up flash. I have a D3200, and wondered if anyone had an opinion on a suitable flash gun. It's for general use, mainly people.

I was looking the SB700? They're going for about £200ish and that seems a lot to me, but perhaps I'm not seeing the bigger picture... (get it, picture?)... I must stop doing that.

Thanks in advance!

#19137 Next piece of equipment to acquire?

Play first - get used to what you have. Kit is important but taking great shots is something to learn, whatever lens or camera you have. I started on the kit lens and moved onto a 18-200mm - which is great for day trips out with the family, it gives me the wide angle for landscape, mid range for the family and zoom for wildlife. It never came off the camera until yesterday. I aquired the 50mm 1.8 AF-S - and only had a little play but it opens up new avenues when shooting the boy at home, or outdoors - great in low light and for amazing bokeh (blurry background). For home use (non-pro), these are all I need. I will be aquiring a flash gun next... then I'll look at a tripod maybe.

Focus on the pitucres (get it... focus!), then worry about kit once you really know what you're doing. It's easy to think the kit will solve the issue that come from trial and error.

#19134 New lens!

Well I got some shots, nice and close with lots of bubbles - will share once they're off the camera. Bathroom is small, but managed some nice ones. Main thing I can't get used to is how light it feels and the fact I don't have zoom, I keep trying though.lol

Biggest issue is we have no natural light in that part of our building, just the standard light bulb... flash gun next I think!

#18764 Hello!

Hi All

New member, just dropping in to say howdy.

I'm from the UK and have been using a D3200 for about 18months. Mainly shooting my boy... who is also 18 months old! You'll see a lot of him as that's pretty much all I shoot. I'm keen on creative photography and absolutely love macro work - especially bugs!

Can't wait to enter my first contest - gutted I missed the silhoutte one, as I have a cracker (it was an xmas shot... get it? Cracker!)

See you around,

Lee
