I have had all three versions of the 24-120 in F-mount. The constant f/4 is by far the best of them.
The only reason I sold mine was that I needed the money to get the D750 and I shoot primes much more than zooms in this range.
The convenience was nice, though.
It is usable wide open, even if the contrast gets even better when slightly stopped down. On the D800E, you will find the difference from the first version even more striking than I did, comparing them on a D700.
IMNSHO, it is well worth the difference in used price today.

My AF D 24-120 developed a fault last week, as the AF started to 'hunt' & not find focus.
This happened on my D800E & D7200, so not a camera fault.
I bought it s/h in June last year from Harrison Cameras with a 12 month warranty.
I returned it & was immediately given a full refund.
A very good reason to never buy from anywhere other than a dealer with warranty!
Because 24-120 is a very useful range when out & about, I reached deeper into my pocket & bought an AF-s 24-120 f4 G ED N.
This equated to three times the cost of the AF D version.
I shall use it over the next couple of weeks and see if it was worth the extra expense.

Speaking of camera phones - They have changed the world of photography. I have spent my entire life standing behind one camera or another and I remember working hard and moving up a grade in camera gear (mostly nikons) and working to improve my craft. Today you pull a phone out and BANG you just took a picture, ran it through some filters, and you're done. If you use a slr or dslr everyione looks at you like you're a relic at the museum. It's a shame but what was once an honored craft has been replaced by a telephone. Don't get me started on AI. Oh Lord, I'm I getting old?

Variations of this rumor have been around since Nikon went whole hog mirrorless. And, I suspect that eventually Nikon will stop making lenses for that mount. However, there are still enough F mount users in the world to justify the continuation of at least a few (more profitable) lenses and accessories. But, I would be surprised to see another F mount camera from Nikon.
The comment about this from a Nikon spokesperson was, even without accounting for errors in translation, ambiguous at best. And, Nikon has said officially, that mirrorless is the future. So, it is what it is.
Whether all of this is a good thing or bad thing does, of course, depend on your point of view.

This picture is of my father at his happiest. He had just completed a series of replicas of notable Wakefield Trophy models from four decades for an aircraft museum. We were out at the local airfield to check that everything worked and they flew before delivering them. I photographed the test flights to make a booklet for visitors to browse in the cafe. This was my first shoot for an exhibition, and I did it with two bodies and three lenses. From the end of the shoot itself and making the first prints I was a wreck, had I overlooked something? It was such a relief to see the contact prints and check them with a loupe and see them exactly how I had previsualized them.
