Nikon F3 Rings when shutter is released & when winding on

07 June 2022 - 03:46 AM

Hello all,

I just recieved an F3 in the post, after much reading and deliberating I settled on the F3 for its rugged build and reliability.

Much to my suprise, when I wind on the shutter theres a *ping* ringing noise as the winder clicks all the way to cock the shutter.

Releasing the shutter has the same sound regardless of shutter speed, a *ping* that resonates. Much like what my FE does!

It does this with / without film and at all speeds.

Of note when at a slower speed like 8 seconds, theres a faint winding / hiss noise internally. Odd.

Hmmm. This doesn't seem normal? What could it be?

I've read that mirror/shutter dampeners could be the cause on other Nikons.

As an aside the viefinder is VERY dark and vignetted on the sides. What could cause that? I ordered a new screen in advance to replace this one (for a different style of shooting) but still, for a viewfinder held in such high regard, my little pentax ME seems to be bigger and better.

The camera is covered by a seller return / warranty of 6 months so that's good to know.

Thanks all ~
