FM frame counter

16 January 2023 - 10:37 PM

So... I found an FM online to replace one that was stolen in a burglary years ago.  It looked good but had a shutter issue so I took it to a local shop for a CLA.  It took 4 months and cost more than the camera is worth, but it has new seals, looks great and seems to work,.. mostly.

After I put in a test roll of film I noticed that the frame counter does not reset or advance.  I can't open it up until I go through this roll of film, but when I can, what should I be looking for?

thanks,

FE2 stuck shutter and mirror

21 November 2022 - 08:25 PM

My FE2 'was' working fine but recently I have been having an issue with the shutter getting stuck and the mirror being locked in the up position. Judging by the number of YouTube videos I see addressing this problem it seems to be a fairly common issue with the FE2 and FM2.  The common solution is to remove the bottom plate and check the little lever that can get stuck on the rewind cam. I started to get in there to check and found that one of the three little screws that hold the bottom plate in place is refusing to move.  These are very tiny screws and I am afraid to give it too much force.  The problem is knowing what 'too much' is. In other applications I might use pounding, heat, penetrating oils, etc, but I expect any of those methods would do more harm than good, At the very least, I would have stripped out the cross point head on the screw.

Are there any non-destructive suggestions? Two of the three screws came out very easily, as I expected.

thanks,

Nikon FM differences

17 February 2022 - 07:01 PM

I had a new FM back in the late 1970s, until it was stolen in a house burglary in the early 80s.  I still miss that camera and have been looking to get another one.  A lot of ads I see include the camera's serial number.  I have read that the first digit of the number indicates the market in which it was originally sold, 2 for Japan, 3 for USA etc.  Is there any difference?  I know that sometimes it can matter as far as warranty coverage but with a 40 year old camera, that won't matter.  Are there any reasons now where it could?

thanks.
