Nikon D3200-Analog Eposure Meter in Viewfinder

30 March 2014 - 06:23 PM

I normally shoot in A Priority thru viewfinder. I have noticed that sometimes I can see the analog exposure info in the viewfinder and sometimes it is not there. It is there when I go to Manual of course. Has anyone else had this happen or am I doing something wrong? I have even reset my settings to default, but no difference. I know when shooting in A priority, if the exposure is wrong, I get a question mark and flash icon flashing in the bottom right of the viewfinder which tells me I probably need to up my ISO, go manual, or turn on Auto ISO, but sometimes I do see the analog exposure meter. Please help! Thanks.

Alaska Cruise / First Big Trip w/Nikon D3200

22 March 2014 - 05:53 PM

Back in the day, I used a Nikon film camera w/multiple lenses. I am familiar with all the basics such as aperture, shutter speeds, and ISO. I have just purchased a new Nikon D3200 and have been trying to get famliar with it. Have purchased a very good book dedicated to this camera. In a couple of months,I will be on a 14 day cruise/land adventure in Alaska. Was thinking on maybe using this strategy: I have a Tamron 18-270mm VR zoom with circular polarizer and lens hood. Was thinking of using aperture priority most of the time to control depth of field (maybe F11, 16, or 22?) for most of my landscape photos and let the camera pick the shutter speed. I have the auto ISO turned on and set max to 3200 and min shutter to 1/30. Do you think this is a good plan or maybe just set the camera in the Landscape mode? Do not want to have to think a lot and miss shots. Will try to use it more before trip. Have spare SD cards and spare Nikon Batteries. Purchased a rubber lens hood to get some shots thru bus windows and glass railroad. I know circular polarizer will also help with these shots. Also have a clear rain cover for camera as it rains a lot there in May I am told. Have waterproof camera bag. Thanks in advance.

Using Older Nikor AI Lenses on D3200

15 March 2014 - 04:52 PM

I have several good older AI prime Nikor lenses from the late 70's. I understand they will work with my D3200 but will have to use manual focus and manual mode. Will I change the Fstops with the camera wheel or with the Fstops settings on the lens? If I am suppose to use the camera to select the aperture, then does it matter what Fstop is dialed on the lens itself?
Thanks.

Another Nikon D3200 Aperture Priority Question

10 March 2014 - 07:45 PM

Stll learning my new camera. Yesterday while on my back deck, I set my camera on Aperture Priority and set the aperature to F6.3. I had my lens zoomed to 270mm with VR turned on. The camera chose a shutter speed of 1/30 and the ISO was flashing in the viewfinder so I guess it was telling me that with that combo, it was going to up the ISO. Without changing my position or zoom, I switched the camera to Auto and it stayed with the F6.3 but it selected a shutter speed now of 1/125 which I could shoot with the VR turned on. Why the two different shutter speeds with the same Fstop?

Nikon D3200 - Aperture Priority

04 March 2014 - 02:05 PM

Helle everyone, I am a newbie to this site and this is my first post. I have just recently purchased a Nikon D3200. Back in the day, I used a Nikon FM film camera and remember the "sunny 16 " rule. My question is this: IF I set the D3200 on Aperture Priority and lets say I have the ISO set at 100 and the aperture at F16, does the camera have enough intelligence to know that I am using a zoom lens and have it zoomed out at 300mm? According to the sunny 16 rule, if it is a bright sun shinny day, and my ISO is at 100, my shutter speed should be 1/125, but does the camera know to set it at 1/300 at least or faster? Also if I remember correctly, from the sunny 16 rule, you get your starting point and from there you can go up or down, , so with that said, if the camera set the shutter speed to 1/500 because I was zoomed out, then the aperture should now be f8. I am confused as you can see. Guess I will just try it and see what happens., but was curious.
Thanks in advance and I am privileged to be a new member here.
