#39726 Milky Way

Posted by Cliff Hairston on 16 June 2016 - 01:29 AM

Hi everyone,

It's been a long time since I've visited here and decided to pop back in and take a look. I think the last time I was here I had a D3200. I've since switched to a full frame (D610) and have really started getting into astrophotography. Here's the first Milky Way shot I ever took....

#23111 35mm or 50mm

Posted by Cliff Hairston on 14 June 2014 - 11:30 PM

I know I originally asked this question almost a year ago, but, I finally got a 50mm AF 1.8D. It's used, a bit scratchy in the focus ring, but came with a bdy for my son to start photography so I gave him my 18-55mm VR kit lens and took the 50mm off the camera and have been absolutely loving it.

The 50 is a pleasure to use. The camera feels a bit too light but that's fine. When I finally shift to an FX body I can take the lens with me. :) Anyways, back on subject. The 50 seems to be much sharper than either one of my kit lenses and actually a bit easier to focus manually on my D3200. The one thing I have to remember though is that there is no VR, so I need to either try to shoot at 1/50 of a second or faster or use a tripod when I'm shooting. That's fine though because it will also force me to explore using higher ISO levels and not be afraid to get a bit of grain in the photo. I constantly keep the ISO at 100-200 to minimize any grain showing up in the photo.

To see a quick shot I took of my dinner tonight (in US at the moment for work) showing off the bokeh of this lens, please go to:

Boy I hope that link works. It's been a while since I've been here....

#12142 Most memorable shot you made

Mine seems so bland in comparison to all of these but, this is my one of my favorite shots I've taken so far...

#12040 Nikon D610 Announced

Posted by Cliff Hairston on 29 December 2013 - 05:20 PM

Brilliant photos nbanjogal! That's the kind of photos I would love to take. Now, here's the funny thing. I posted this in the wrong forum lol!!! That question was meant for the Nikon Df announcement and talk. Seeing what the D600 can do with someone who knows what they are doing is truly stunning though. I'll get back to working on my technique (and figuring out what I'm doing) on my D3200 for now but boy oh boy it's nice to see what can be done with any and all of this gear. The D600/610 looks like a very nice option if/when I decide to go to full frame. Thank you very much :)

#12029 Nikon D610 Announced

Posted by Cliff Hairston on 29 December 2013 - 12:55 PM

So, my question is, has anyone bought one yet and used it for astro stuff?  With its low light performance I would think it would be great for it. If I were to buy one that would be the first thing I would want to try/do with it.

#5299 Which DSLR is best for videography?

Posted by Cliff Hairston on 22 October 2013 - 01:42 AM

I would think the D7200 would have to be coming out soon. Personally, I'm loving my D3200 for video (the main reason I bought it actually). I use 720/50fps at the moment as I like the ultra smooth playback. I would imagine the 5xxx and 7xxx series would do 1080p at that speed or higher but, for what I'm going to use it for (recording me playing bass and giving recorded tutorials) the 720p can't be beat. The fact that it's a handy little snapper has been a very pleasant bonus (and huge distraction lol).

#5298 pics of the moon over the ocean

That one made me laugh too. :) Here's a quick example of one of my moon shots. I'm very much in the beginners/feeling out phase with photography at the moment so the first thing you'll probably notice is a lot of noise due to the settings I used. This was handheld:

My biggest thing was keeping steady. I'm still very much fighting with that but the VR lens helps out a lot with that at the moment.

Settings:
1/1600 sec
ISO 1600
f/5.6
200mm

This was done with a D3200 and the 55-200mm VR ED kit lens. VR was on, manual focus and set to aperture priority.

#711 35mm or 50mm

Posted by Cliff Hairston on 01 October 2013 - 01:17 PM

I see this question pop up quite a bit in various forums and sites. Any thoughts as to which would be a good first prime lens? For a little background:

Camera: D3200

Lenses: 18-55mm VR  and 55-200mm ED VR

Essentially I want something nice and clear. Out of my current lenses I prefer using the 55-200 lens for pretty much everything but, out of necessity (and sheer stubbornness) I use the 18-55 as often as possible as I don't feel that I'm giving it a fair shake.

All thoughts and comments greatly appreciated....
