D810 locks when connected to Mac laptop

I can't get my D810 to tether to a MacBook Air 13" (High Sierra 10.13.6) laptop. Once the (new Nikon) USB lead is connected to both, the camera just locks up, and also is not recognised by any software.

 

The USB bus in System Report does not show it, neither does Image Capture, Bridge, Finder, etc.

 

s/w I have tried -

Capture One 20

Nikon Camera Control Pro II

Lightroom Classic

Camera RC Deluxe

Sofortbild

 

Any help or suggestions would be very appreciated!
