#82171 New-to-me Sony RX10 IV

Posted by bluzman on 09 February 2023 - 04:47 PM

I sold my Panasonic DC-FZ1000ii to MPB to partially fund a used Sony RX10 IV. Both are bridge cameras with 1" sensors but the Sony is the only camera of the genre to use phase detection autofocus. AFAIK, all others use contrast detection autofocus. It has 315 AF points covering 65% of the sensor, a burst rate of up 24 fps, and a Zeiss lens. The max aperture/focal length ranges are f/2 - f/4 and 8.8mm to 200mm, respectively. With a crop factor of 2.73, the full frame equivalent angle of view corresponds to 24mm to 600mm. I figured that the RX10 IV would be an interesting replacement for the Panasonic and a viable BIF shooter. Here are some shots from the first couple of sessions.

#81867 Murals

Thanks, guys! I mostly shoot wildlife with an occasional venture into other genres. The city where I live puts out an email blast mid-week that highlights places, events, etc that will be occurring on the weekend. Recently, it's become a source for me to find different subjects to photograph. This time around, I learned that it can be a challenge to take pictures in narrow alleys. :D :P

Before housing a restaurant, this building was home to Hope Hardware for 80 years starting in 1910. This sign painted on an alley wall is the only reminder of a business that once served a then small (and now burgeoning) North Texas city.

Look at the illustration at the bottom of pg 8 in the section of the manual titled"The Monitor/Viewfinder". Based on what I see there, it looks like you may have inadvertently hit the Display button while playing back some image(s). If I'm right, you should be able, during Playback, to use the Display button to select a different (clear) screen.

I particularly like your fire hydrant. We don't have them here (as far as I know).

I can't help feeling they'd be a magnet for vandals if we did.

A long time ago in what seems today to be a galaxy far, far away, people opened fire hydrants in cities to get wet and cool down in the heat of summer. It was and probably still is illegal in most places but I think it's still done although I suspect not on the scale it once was.

#81506 A thought experiment

Posted by bluzman on 12 December 2022 - 06:29 PM

If you were restricted to use only two lenses and one body, what would your choices be?

i would go with a Z6II and currently, my AF-S 14-24/2.8 on an FTZ and the Z 70-200/2.8 S.

I would like to update my 14-24 to the Z 14-24/2.8 S, but it is difficult to explain why to an accountant. The slightly lower quality of the output from the AF-S doesn’t lose me any customers as I know how to shoot around its limitations…

I'm replying as a non-professional based on what I currently own.

The body choice is an easy one for me...my D500. The choice of lenses is another matter. Since I enjoy shooting wildlife, one lens would have to be my full frame Nikon AF-P FX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR. I like the results it produces on my DX bodies. The other would probably be my Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC (DX) OS HSM Contemporary. It's a great general purpose lens that includes some wide angle capability.

#81505 Monochrome Monday (12/12/2022)

Posted by bluzman on 12 December 2022 - 06:10 PM

If I recall correctly, the idea is to include the color source image if it's available and, if the source is in color, identify the method for converting to monochrome. Also, if possible, post the shooting parameters and what camera was used.

This is the best seller of beef in our town IMO. The owner raises his own cattle.
