#65092 How to remove a stuck Nikon UV Haze Filter from a Nikon lens.

Posted by Colin B on 30 October 2019 - 02:26 AM

I managed to free a stuck filter on my B700 using a vicious looking pair of plumber's slip joint pliers.

I taped over the serrated jaws with electrical tape to protect the finish, had someone else hold the camera firmly so I could use both hands on the pliers then used my left hand to grip carefully before pulling firmly with my right.

A bit scary but it worked.

Good idea shooting in black and white - it somehow suits the subject matter. You were also very fortunate (or clever) in having the place to yourself for long enough. When we were touring through Europe recently it was often frustrating trying to take halfway decent photographs at popular sites because of the crowds.

#60500 Need camera/carry on bag for European trip

Posted by Colin B on 17 February 2019 - 12:42 AM

You could use almost any sort of bag or backpack so long as you swaddle the camera and lens in a generous amount of bubble wrap or a thick pullover.

It would also be worth carefully checking the airlines' carry on restrictions as many of them have been cracking down on the size, weight and number of carry-ons because of people going overboard with them. Apparently some people on short trips stuff everything into their cabin luggage to avoid the wait for checked luggage.

#55154 Please Critruque and help

Well, all I can say is "I wish I had taken that shot".

Yes, a cleaner background, or one blurred into insignificance would be nice but it is not as if you could say "Hey, birdie, just step over here into this open patch of ground away from that clutter.... :P " Too much fluffing around with the camera or shifting positions and all you get is a flap of wings and a missed opportunity, especially with these guys as Egrets are very wary birds.

The only thing I would change is to go back in my time machine and let the bird take one more step past that whitish log(?) behind its head but a bit of fiddly work in Photoshop could fix that.

DSCN0397.JPG

Taken at Perth Zoo last Tuesday. the Koalas were asleep (as usual) then the keeper started opening the gate to set out their afternoon feed and this little guy woke up and struck this postcard-style pose for about half a second before climbing down to eat.

Camera: Nikon Finepix B700

Focal Length 89.6mm

Aperture F5.6

Shutter 1/60

No Photoshopping or exposure compensation - just a point it and shoot grab shot.

I took this shot at the Perth Nepalese Community fair at Elizabeth Quay in Perth yesterday. Shot on auto from around 30 metres away with the afternoon sun behind the stage. The young lady was prancing around quite energetically and the stage was cluttered with musical instruments etc so getting a more or less tidy background was not easy

This guy was hanging around the picnic area at Barrabup pool near Nannup W.A. He did not seem much concerned about us so I guess he may be used to scrounging food from picnickers.

Love the first and last shots in this series, particularly the first one. That smile makes me want to smile right back at her.

#54738 Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides)

Having lunch at Nornalup (W.A.) when this raven agreed to pose in exchange for a few breadcrumbs.

Her only request was that I did not refer to her as a crow DSCN0193.JPG DSCN0193 adjusted.jpg

First pic is straight off the camera:

Nikon Coolpix B700 on auto

Aperture F5.6

Shutter 1/60

ISO 450

Focal Length 81mm

Second with a bit of post shooting work in Photoshop:

Auto smart fix (my guilty pleasure)

Light adjusted to lighten shadows in her neck.

Auto sharpening, manually cut back from 14% to 7%

I thought the original image was a bit soft but did I go too far with the Photoshopping?

#54693 Nephila Ornata

Two more of my favourite 8 legged model. Hubby is still around but the missus has really added some girth as her eggs develop. In a couple of weeks she will wrap them in a small egg-shaped cocoon of spider silk and hide them somewhere in the bushes. Soon after she gets her bikini body back she will die. :(

Both taken with my Nikon Coolpix B700 on auto.

#54453 Snap Bridge - is it any use to me?

Posted by Colin B on 13 March 2018 - 05:43 PM

Sportsguy's and Nikonian's post highlight the major difference between professionals and amateurs.

My latest (probably heretical) thought on this is that I probably will not bother with Snapbridge at all and will just carry spare SD cards as others have suggested.

Being even more heretical in this gadget-obsessed age I wonder if Nikon may have served us better by putting the effort used to develop Snapbridge into improving other more practical aspects of the camera like lenses, processors etc.?
