#82067 Nikkor Z 24-140 S vs Nikkor Z DX 18-140 for Z50 traveler?

Posted by Nikonphotographer on 30 January 2023 - 04:55 PM

I bought a Z50 with the 16-50 DX lens for overseas travel, I added the 18-140 shortly afterwards, I can't recommend it enough, nice and light, but the images with it are very sharp.

#81379 Lens Choice

Posted by Nikonphotographer on 03 December 2022 - 06:14 AM

I'm not sure if you've found out that the Af-D lenses don't auto focus on the Z cameras, so the 24-70 f4 would be a good choice, it's the lens I bought with my Z5, it's a cracking, sharp lens, auto focus is instant.

I wasn't expecting it to be delivered just yet, but a nice surprise for it to be delivered this morning

Not that I need another camera, I ended ordering one with the 28mm SE lens

I like the look of the black Zfc too. Whether it's enough to coax cash out of my pockets is another matter entirely. The extra cost doesn't help.

I've never actually looked at a Zfc but I imagine it's exterior is fashioned out of plastic as is the case with it's big brothers. Too bad it's not black anodized like my beautiful Minolta XD-11.

The chassis is cast in magnesium alloy, the top cover is metal along with the dials that are machined out of aluminium.

#81158 Z5? What’s the verdict.

Posted by Nikonphotographer on 12 November 2022 - 05:51 AM

I bought one last year, along with the 24-70 f4 S lens, then added the 14-30 f4 shortly after, it's a great camera, as I didn't need better video function and the top LCD screen, there was no need to consider the Z6,

#80995 Considering an upgrade?

Without knowing the type of photography you do, it's hard to recommend either of your choices.

But if you don't do much or any video, and can live without the top LCD screen, the Z5 is a cracking camera, I toyed with the Z6 instead, but didn't need the better video, I took a chance because all my previous DSLR'S had the top LCD screen, but I've not missed it.

Your current camera uses SD cards,as does the Z5, and has 2 card slots, I set mine to save Jpeg on one card and Raw on the other, the Z6 uses CF express cards, there much more expensive than SD cards.

The only Z lenses I have are the 14-30 f4 and 24-70 f4, I can't fault either, and do find them to be sharper that any F mount lenses I've own.

#76616 Saying hello from North Wales

Posted by Nikonphotographer on 08 January 2022 - 06:04 AM

Macro photography has got to be one of the hardest genres to get a high successful rate to start with, I've always had a interest in it, but when I first got into photography (around 45 years ago) it was near impossible to even think about trying with a rangefinder with a 40mm lens, after I got my first SLR, I saved up for a macro zoom lens, although not a true 1:1 macro, it did the job, but success rate wasn't brilliant, just keep trying, and at least these days you haven't got to waist film trying to get the images perfect, these days I'm using a proper 1:1 macro lens, (Sigma 105) and a ring flashlight (Nissin MF-18) with that set up I'm probably getting around 90% success rate.

Just keep trying, and read or watch YouTube videos, you'll get there eventually...

I wear reading glasses but wasn't using them to see through the viewfinder, that could be an issue too.

Just use the diopter adjustment next to the viewfinder until you can see it clearly

#75778 Manual Operation

Posted by Nikonphotographer on 10 November 2021 - 03:41 PM

the AF / M switch I am referring to is on the camera body, on the side of the lens mount. You turn it from AM to M. I cant see when you would need to switch this, unless this actually stops the camera from auto adjusting the lens aperture, like if you are using a lens with manual aperture adjustment maybe

The AF/M switch on the body is slightly different to the one on the lens, but in a sense, it does the same, but slightly different, only bodies with the built-in Auto focus motor have the switch on the body, to retract the Auto focus screw drive that drives the older AF lenses, the AF switch on the lens are on lenses that are the later AF-S (Silent Wave) lens that doesn't have the screw drive that's driven by the body.

Now manual exposure can be set differently depending upon the type of lens being used, but if your using an earlier AF-D lens, you'll need to turn and lock the aperture ring at f22, and then use the command dial to set the aperture.

The only time you would use the aperture ring itself is if your using an older Ai or Ais manual focus lens.

I think you're confusing manual focus with manual exposure.

The A/M slider on the lens disables the auto focus mode so you can focus manually, something you might need to do if the lighting makes the camera hunt on the Auto focus mode.

Manual exposure is when you set the mode dial to M and use the command dials to set shutter speed and aperture independently from what the camera meter recommends.

#75710 Question about the new 400mm prime for Z cameras.

Posted by Nikonphotographer on 06 November 2021 - 04:54 PM

I guess my next question is... can the TC in this lens be disabled when shooting (I can't imagine how), or is this really a faux 56mm f/4 lens?

This image is Nikons 180-400 F mount lens that also had an inbuilt teleconverter,

The newer Z mount lens will work in the same manner
