#49807 About to dust off my old Minolta

Posted by nikdood17 on 12 July 2017 - 11:46 PM

So how'd it all come out, already?

I had a dozen Minolta film cameras and lenses (used film Minoltas are so cheap....) Plus many other film cameras -- a dozen Nikons with some killer lenses, a Rollei and a Yashicamat, a dozen Canon Canonet rangefinder cameras, A 4x5 and a 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 Crown Graphic, both of which I am putting together from parts, an Exacta, three Bilora Bella 4x6 and 6x6 cm cameras and other I cannot remember offhand.

I don't collect film cameras, I rescue them.

Long live film.

I HATE humidity. It's about 10 percent where I am right now. Hot but dry.

#49523 Well, WhaddyaKnow, The June Taylor Dancers. Awaaaay we go!

Did you know Jackie Gleason was married to June Taylor's sister? I have photos of the two somewhere.

#48984 Lens opinions?

Posted by nikdood17 on 06 June 2017 - 06:41 PM

Can you rent one or more of the lenses on your bucket list and try them out in the field? I had a wonderful 400mm lens years ago and it seemed to me the hawks I tried to photograph knew I had a 400mm and not a 500mm lens and stayed just far enough away from me so I couldn't get a great shot. Only you know how close you need to get for what you want to do. Good luck.

#48858 What is your favorite lens you own?

Posted by nikdood17 on 01 June 2017 - 07:30 PM

I suppose my mistress is my 70-200 f2.8 Nikkor but my wife is my 50mm f 1.4 Nikkor. The former is a bit hard to handle (heavy) but oh, so sweet. The latter just keeps on truckin' without any problems.

#48827 Nikon Announces 3 new Lenses Including Fish eye!

Posted by nikdood17 on 31 May 2017 - 05:24 PM

I'm an old bird and don't personally have much use for a very fast short or long lens but I know other folks have a different attitude. That fisheye is interesting to me, though.

#48774 A very Mellow Yellow.

Pentax K100 or K1000?

When I was a nipper I loved the old "Honeywell" Pentax but when I had the dough I bought a Nikon F instead, because the Nikon had the battery-driven motor drive. But Pentax was a lovely camera system with great lenses. Fun photo of the flower.

#48753 new guy to the forum, nice to be aboard

Well, I think you're a young whippersnapper. I think I've got a few years on you (maybe that's why my bones hurt). My first Nikon was the F with the electric motor drive and a battery pack you slung over your shoulder. That thingabob never did work well at all and I soon got a Jacobson battery pack that fits onto the bottom of the F. Weighed a ton but there was nothing else out there like it. The Nikon F ruled news photography in those days. I still have a Nikon F with motor drive and Nikon battery pack. Plus four Nikkormats, a N2000, two, 2 N60s, 2 N70s and lots of truly neat Nikkor lenses. Did I mention I love Nikons? Methinks you do, too.

#48387 Where would you advise I send my D610 and 20mm 1.8 prime for repair in the UK?

Posted by nikdood17 on 05 May 2017 - 04:49 PM

What did the man say -- "if your photos aren't good enough, then you are not close enough."

Well, the good news is that you're at least trying to get close enough.

Sometimes you have to go into harms way (or at least pretty close) to really get the photograph.

Like the pilot said to the man who was making a parachute jump with a Speed Graphic camera in hand, "don't forget to pull the dark slide AND the ripcord."

Sometimes there is a lot to to when you just have to get the shot. Good luck.

#48242 First full frame

Posted by nikdood17 on 27 April 2017 - 03:04 PM

Tons and tons of more pixels is not the end all for high quality images. Too many pixels has a downside. A zillion pixels may not fit into your computer very well and S-L-O-W it down. In my humbug opinion, chasing the next camera Nikon puts out is not a very good idea. Contrary to what some belief, major manufacturers have been known, at times, to come out with a new camera body using out-of-date items like the autofocus. Sometimes the latest gadget is not the best but merely a sales ploy. You might be better off buying something you know works well instead of chasing rainbows (except in real life, of course, where rainbows make great images). Good luck.

#48087 recommend sites for used lenses

Posted by nikdood17 on 21 April 2017 - 01:58 PM

I recently bought a used Sigma macro lens from KEH marked UG (ugly). I was astounded at the fine condition the lens was in. There was one little piece of dirt or something in one spot. I flicked it off with my fingernail and then I had a lens that looked pretty much brand new.

#48030 Where are all the old film cameras and lenses?

Posted by nikdood17 on 17 April 2017 - 10:22 PM

I went by a high end thrift shop today and found a bargain, an Olympus Camedia point-and-shoot for $10. A roaring 4 megapixels, 3x zoom and a f2.8 lens. I's small enough to throw over my shoulder and hardly know it is there. And the optics are truly excellent. This copy looks almost new for the price of a couple of hambugers.

#48007 not sure why i could see spider web and spider but camera could not.

Posted by nikdood17 on 16 April 2017 - 03:49 PM

I think perhaps you are asking too much from that lens. I understand it focuses down to 37.4", which does not make it a macro in my book.

#47980 Best lenses for travel kit?

Posted by nikdood17 on 13 April 2017 - 05:36 PM

Take half the gear and twice the money. I found out that if I take mucho lenses I'm spending most of my time trying to get over to that really great spot. With one lens I found I would pause at just the right point to utilize that lens and saved myself a lot of useless wandering around. You might get different mileage, however....

#47906 memories of a gentle winter

Posted by nikdood17 on 09 April 2017 - 07:45 PM

It will be way down to about 63 degrees tonight in my neck of the woods in the California desert. But we have five seasons, not four. The regular seasons and the Monsoon Season, too.

Very nice photos.
