White Light in Portraits? Good or Bad?

29 November 2013 - 03:49 PM

I'm a really newb to strobist photography but I was wondering to your thoughts on portraits where much of the face becomes very white from the external flash.  To me it looks so unnatural and not the most pleasing in many cases.   What do you guys think?  Do you prefer to use warming filters to bring out more skin tone or do you like the look of bright white light cast on skin with skin tones in the shadows.   I'm talking in general of course.

Nikon D5100 with a Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 lense?

27 November 2013 - 10:23 PM

Hey Guys,

I'm seriously considering getting the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 art lense for my D5100.  i have heard nothing but great reviews and am not concerned about the quality of the lense.  What I am concerned with is a couple of things;

1.  My D5100 is just over 1 lb with battery, and the lense weighs close to 2 lbs.  Is this something I should be concerned about as far as being to front heavy and awkward to walk around and shoot with?

2. Is 16.2 mp enough to get the full appreciation of the lense?

Thanks,
