#18013 Good news for Nikon D600 owners

Posted by Nesster on 24 March 2014 - 05:10 AM

So an update: Nikon New York facility acknowledged receipt on 3/18; I got notice they shipped the camera back Friday 3/21, with delivery expected today. Of course 'adult signature' is required, so I may not get the camera till tomorrow... This is pretty excellent turn around, IMO.

#17817 Good news for Nikon D600 owners

I decided to take the offer, I'm in NJ and the camera was sent to Nikon's NY repair center. Dropped it off at a UPS Store Saturday. Then had a moment of anxiety: did I actually have any legal proof I'd sent it? LOL. Tuesday I got the email from Nikon saying they're replacing the shutter. I'll update when I get the camera back.

I tried to think positively about the oil problem, and indeed the camera stayed clean for a while, but the spots kept coming back, and yes, very obvious against pale backgrounds. Getting rid of them wasn't too onerous for me, but still annoying enough that I decided to let Nikon fix it.

#11773 Nikkor AF 28mm f/2.8D or Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8 G

Posted by Nesster on 22 December 2013 - 05:56 AM

Hi, neither of those are portrait lenses on a crop sensor.  The 35mm is the better choice for people shots, as it gives you a 52mm full frame view, and a tighter crop for people, but the 50mm f.18 G would be your ideal "portrait" lens on a DX camera.  The 28mm is too wide and if you start getting close with it, it can distort people's faces.

That is true... however, as counterpoint, back when Annie Leibowitz was a 'real' photographer for Rolling Stone, she used Nikon F and her favorite portrait lens was the 35mm... she says because that let her include more of the surroundings.

I have the 28 AF-D, though to my surprise it doesn't have such a great rep with the Nikon aficionados. The 35 (I don't have experience, though I do use a manual focus AiS 35/2, which is wonderful) has a great rep, plus the angle of view may be a bit better for portraits.

You can hunt for a 28, sometimes they can be had very cheaply, and thus get both! :)

I'm really liking this lens, I bought it on special from KEH...

#11419 Large format printing - myths and facts.

Posted by Nesster on 13 December 2013 - 08:27 AM

I would love to see an exact match between a budget 10mp camera and a D800E, using same lens and taken at the exact same time....blown up in large format...lets see what the difference is..

I might be able to do something --- a 6 MP K100D Pentax, and a D600 --- the same lens would have to be a Tamron Adaptall 90mm macro. My printer does 13 inches, so I could print them that way, or else print a smaller section at that size. And I could shoot with a film camera and the same lens as well, and see how well a mini lab scan prints (given what's being said generally, you'd think a 1500 pix wide film scan would not look good at 11 inches wide, but I've done this many times and the results look fine)

This is from '85, OM2s, Tamron Adaptall 35-80 SP 01a. I don't think I can do better.

#11358 Old flash guns

Posted by Nesster on 12 December 2013 - 09:28 AM

Old flashes like the T20 are good and inexpensive. I also have a larger SB28 which works great.

The Nikon SB-400 from the current line up is very functional

I thought I'd see a bunch of santas :) Nice photos, I like the girls in the tree.

(reminds me of a time I went to a bar in Philly, and they had a Santa party, dozens and dozens of Santas getting drunk...)

#11344 Large format printing - myths and facts.

Posted by Nesster on 12 December 2013 - 05:25 AM

Excellent post, on a point that needs to be repeated. There are so many (marketing) things about photography that get repeated as absolute truth with very few people actually bothering to check for themselves.

I really feel bad for humanity before 24/36 MP digital, especially when we were dealing with mere film. We must have been visually impaired and/or culturally deprived ;)
