Every now and then, I run into a sale on nice lenses from the film era that would work for either DX or full-frame, but I find myself skipping it because I like that wonderful technology of auto focus.

I got the 5300 because it was in my price range. I wanted a camera I could learn on that I could afford. If I was really knowledgeable about photography and wanted to make some money at it, I would have gone with the 7100 or higher. There's a lot to learn to be good enough to say you know it all. For now I just wanted a good camera that I can fun with while learning.
If there's one thing I can say I have learned for sure, it is that I will never know it all. There is always something else to learn. I started with the D3000 and I have learned more than I thought I ever would. I hope to upgrade soon to the full-frame D610 and I expect to be introduced into a whole other world of photography...

So I pulled out the camera to get some photos of my son and his girlfriend in front of the tree last night...I even tossed the flash on top...I took a few photos of the two of them and then they wanted one with his dog like this:
Knowing the dog, I was ready and got a great "photo bomb"!He's such a silly dog!
That is hilarious!!!! Just GOT to be the center of attention!

I am so excited! I have had these macro lens filters for quite some time and didn't know how to use them. Last night, I got them out and tried the 10x with my new 35mm 1.8 lens and "BOOM" got it figured out! Got some pretty cool closeups of the snow. Actually trying to capture a nice clear snowflake. Not too successful on that yet, but I'm gonna keep trying as long as the snow keeps flying. Did get a few though, just not as clear as I want.

If you don't mind a little tongue-in-cheek review of why you should get D7100:
You might have just sold me on the 7100.....

I'll be buying my first DSLR, and I'm leaning on getting the D5300. I think the vari-angle display is a must if you're interested in shooting video. Also, the wifi + gps capabilities are a plus!
I agree Purrado! These are all pluses for me. Unless I get blown away by another model, it's going to be the 5300 for me. Haven't done much with video yet, but with the 5300, I think I will do a lot of video and love it!
