#61806 Help - Z6 & Nikkor lenses Autofocus issue

Posted by Dogbytes on 21 April 2019 - 11:54 PM

You need AF-S lenses for the autofocus to work as there is no focus motor in the adapter.

Or AF-P lenses...

Lovely portrait, Sunshine. Well done.

I had a rethink, we went on a Wild Gin Safari this afternoon and I’m submitting this one instead! 😁

I have a longstanding dislike of zooms. Completely irrational these days, given the quality of modern ones. I’m almost tempted to give the 70-200 a miss altogether and get a 300/f4PF and a 35/1.4. The two together would probably fill 90% of my photographic requirements and for not much more than the price as a 70-200/2.8!

I had a 24-70/2.8 before and I hated it, really hated it. Since everyone else loves it, I guess it’s just a clash of personalities but it would have to be the only remaining lens on Earth before I put one on my camera again. The 24mm angle, I love, and I’ve had a couple of 24/2.8D lenses which I tend to buy for a particular job and then sell on. I don’t use them often enough to keep one.

I have always promised myself that one day I’d have a 58mm f1.4 but the 70-200 would ‘make sense’ from a dog photography point of view and the 58mm focal length is a bit close to 70mm... However I have recently become aware of the even more ridiculously priced 35/1.4 which seems to be of the same character as the 58 but usefully further away from 70mm. It’s finding a second hand one that’s proving problematic. Of course, I could keep that zoom I’ve got and buy a new one! Now there’s another possibility that’s going to taunt me all day:D

Wow! What a fun moment to capture. Really well done! Shot with the new D850, I'm guessing? Looks great, Dogbytes!

Thank you :D Yes indeed - me and the D850 getting used to each other. It’s an impressive beast! Under 900 clicks on it and a proper Nikon battery grip. Just got to get a couple of suitable lenses sorted out for it now. Mind you, this zoom is pretty good.

EXIF data is up now.

The D850 only arrived on Friday evening, so I’m still learning to drive it! This’ll have to do for now...

#61461 Nearly new D850

Posted by Dogbytes on 05 April 2019 - 03:21 PM

Well, my eBay D850 & MB-D18 (a genuine Nikon one) arrived this afternoon and it’s lovely! It’s had fewer than 800 shutter clicks and it looks like new.

I sold everything to get it, except for my Nikkor AF-P 70-300 f/4.5-5.6E ED VR which I will be using on it until (a) I’ve sold some more stuff and ( b ) I’ve decided on a long-term lens plan.

Current thinking involves a 70-200/2.8FL and a fast normal prime - possibly an AF-S 35/1.4 or 58/1.4 An indulgence but I do like a fast prime.

Any thoughts?

#61249 Which camera best for me?

Posted by Dogbytes on 25 March 2019 - 02:03 PM

He says its great in low light and with the D500 and the crop sensor it turns it into a 450mm which gives that extra reach.

Yes, but by the time you’ve cropped a D850 image down to 20.8mp - you’ll have the equivalent of 600mm!:D

#61170 Which camera best for me?

Well, the D500 is getting a lot of votes here - so I’m going to be different!

I’m in a somewhat similar position in that I find my current camera, a D610, struggles with a couple of facets of my photography - namely focusing in low light and AF tracking subjects (racing Lurchers in particular) heading straight towards the camera.

In addition, I’m on a strict budget (that is I have to sell something before I can buy anything else). I narrowed my potentials to D500 (cheap, fast, ‘extra’ reach due to cropped sensor), D5 (hideously expensive, stunningly fast, great in the dark but needs long lenses due to low pixel count) and D850 (massive pixel count so can live with shorter lenses, still pretty damned quick and could add a battery grip later for more speed, still better in low light than my D610).

My current long lens is a 70-300 f4.5-5.6 zoom so, with a D850, I could lose that and add a 70-200/2.8 FL and still have more cropping power with an added 2 stops of light at the respective long ends.

In the end I concluded that the D850 is the best choice for me, it simply gives me more flexibility even if it takes a while longer to get the perfect kit together.

If you, like me, are a one camera person with a range of photographic interests, then any camera is going to be a bit of a compromise. You can either find something which is way better for one particular subject and a bit of a let down for the rest - or you can try to find one that’ll perform acceptably for you in all spheres. I’m hoping that, for me, the D850 is going to be the latter...

Best of luck and let us know what you choose and how you get on with it.

I should be on an iPhone forum or something, this week, because that’s what I’m stuck with for a while! My D610 and two of my three lenses are on eBay (and have bids on them, so I daren’t take them out and risk breaking them!) as I try to get the cash together for a D850 by selling my toys rather than spending any money (basically because I don’t have any). I really do have to sell some prints this year...

Anyway. iPhone SE, yesterday morning, Prussia Cove. Slightly tweaked in Snapseed.

No beach scenes near me right now.  We're in the midst of what I hope will be our last winter storm.  Wife and I went back up to higher elevations looking for some snow.  The road pictured here was closed so we walked up to the tunnel.
