#43786 Very noob question about 50mm 1.8g lens

Posted by TKC_TX on 06 December 2016 - 06:38 AM

I guess I should add that when a lens has two apertures listed it means that the maximum aperture available Changes as the lens zooms in or out. The aperture cans still be changed at any focal length, only the maximum available is reduced as you zoom to the longer focal lengths.

The listed aperture on a lens is the maximum it will go to. Other than some very specialized lenses, the aperture can always be adjusted.

#43595 New Tripod!

Posted by TKC_TX on 29 November 2016 - 01:36 PM

After almost 2 months of shooting with my new tripod, I Love it... mostly..,

First, it is Very stable and quick to setup. I mostly use it at the local bird sanctuary from the Blinds area or lake shore. So far it has worked in every situation I have tried it in.

Biggest negative? It is Heavy! I tried attaching it to my backpack, but it was too much, so now I just carry it in my hand. Functionality the main issue I'm having is sticky legs from using it in the mud and muck along the shore. I clean them after every trip, but it hasn't seemed to be enough. Thoughts???

Oh. I did change the clamp to an Arca Swiss type but that's just a personal preference thing.

#43594 Which camera to upgrade to?

Posted by TKC_TX on 29 November 2016 - 01:25 PM

My first DSLR was a D70 that I bought used. I sold it and treated myself to a shiny new D90 when they first came out in late 2008. At the time, the difference seemed Huge! Now, not so much. I Love my D90s. Of which I own 2, but time and technology has passed them by. They were made mostly irrelevant by the D7000 series bodies in my humble opinion. I also own a D300 and think it is noticeably better in every respect than my D90s. All that being said, at this point I wouldn't go looking to buy either. A D7100 will do most everything better and won't cost a Whole Lot more than a Good D300. I bought a D500 because the D300 controls layout kinda spoiled me and thanks to a good year at work I could afford it, but I realize it's out of a Lot of price ranges. If I couldn't afford that, a D7200 would have been my choice.

I've been practicing around my neighborhood in the 'burbs, and have found that setting the ISO a bit on the high side, setting the aperture around 5.6 to 8 or so and then keeping an eye on the exposure let's me make quick shutter speed changes as necessary. So far it seems to be producing good results. I've settled on the 35mm for now, but have found that I would like something a bit wider so a 20mm or 24mm is in my future. Unfortunately, with a kid in college, pennies are a bit tight at the moment. I tend to have to sell something to be able to buy something! Lol

#42636 New Tripod!

I just upgraded from my Walmart Velbon tripod to this! bf78e5c4083b302a711eeae4cc3af853.jpgA Manfrotto 055XPRO3 Aluminum tripod with an XPRO Ball head. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but it feels very sturdy and seems to be high quality. Reviews to come as soon as I get a chance to strap the D500 to it and shoot some.

Hi everyone. First post here. I'm Tommy, live in the DFW area of Texas, and recently upgraded from my old faithful D90 to an amazing new D500. I'm looking forward to participating in the forum and learning a lot from the other members here.
