Tech question about sensors and pixels

17 February 2017 - 08:05 AM

If a 24mm sensor can hold 24 megs of pixels, why doesn't a 35mm sensor hold 35? I have noticed that a Nikon DF has a fill sized sensor, but only holds 16 mps.

Is there no corollation between sensor size and the number of pixels?

Please, try to explain in layman's terms, if you are a tech guy. I am an art guy, not an electrical engineer.

Thanks!

Special Needs Prom - "A Night to Remember" - Feb. 10, 2017

17 February 2017 - 07:45 AM

These were taken with my D610, 20 years old 50mm 1.8 lens, and on-camera integral flash.

Tim Tebow started this annual event for Special Needs people, and it has grown like crazy. Attendance at this one location has grown by over 200% over the last two years, and nationwide the growth is even larger. They even had one in Haiti this year!

The star you see here is my daughter Emily. She is 17 years old, attends the Applied Behavioral Center for Autism school, loves lemonade and orange juice, and watching movies and making greeting cards. Her current movie obsession is "The Wizard of Oz" (I got her the new Blu-Ray edition, and she would watch it over and over all day long if we let her).

She danced nearly every song with he partner, a behavioral therapist and personal friend.

Emily was born with Down Syndrome and developed Autism as she grew older. She had open heart surgery at age 4 months, and has been as healthy as a race horse ever since.

Wild colors! Show us what you've got!

I sometimes like to play with the colors and textures in post-processing to see what kind of psychedelic world I can create. If you ever do this, show us some of yours. Here are some of mine.

Opinions on the Nikon DF with 50mm 1.8G lens

21 January 2017 - 09:21 AM

So, I am considering a DF in the near future. I discovered I can get a nice used body for around $1,600 and a used 50mm 1.8G for around $160 from Ebay. So for around $1,800 I can have one of these, much cheaper than buying new (new they sell for $2,250-$2,800).

I like the older style look of it, and I like the older style mechanical dial controls on the top. I'm almost 60 years old, so it's familiar to me.

My question is, what is the downside with this camera? I have not read many reviews of it, and everything I have seen so far is positive.

If you have one, what is your opinion of it? How does it compare to a D7100, or  D610, for example? (Those are the two I presently use.)

18mm DX is the same as 28mm FX?

19 January 2017 - 05:37 PM

I have two Nikon DSLRs, a D7100 and a D610. The first is a DX format, the second an FX format. Today I got a very nice used 28mm AF lens for the FX camera.

I took two photos, one with the DX format camera 18mm, and one with the FX format camera 28mm. I used the same settings and stood in the same spot with both.

Net result: both images look nearly identical. So, my question is, are these two lenses giving me the exact same angle of view? I'm not a tech guy, but they look the same to me.

Thanks Peter! (hahaha)
