#56639 New website

Posted by Malice on 03 August 2018 - 12:53 PM

Movin' on... ;-)

For whatever reason, clicking on the "clients" header opens up a new tab. On top of that this area doesn't seem to be finished, yet. Most of the categories there lead basically to the same galleries.

You know, I'm really impressed by most of your work, so please don't get me wrong. But in my opinion you might want to think about getting the descriptions on the "about" page an overhaul. The way it's written it sounds a little if you started with your "hobby" and try to make some money off of it now. Just don't mention the years/dates. Saying you've been into photography for years and been doing this and that for quite some time now, will probably be precise enough and leave some room for the imagination of the readers.

Another thing that probably most readers won't pick up on, but since I noticed, I'm mentioning it: with your wedding packages you offer to have a second photographer around, but on the "about" page, you describe Crew One as a one man show. On the surface that appears to be a bit contradictory. I know, you also talk about networks on the website, but again, I'm not sure every potential client will pick up on that. So maybe it might be a good idea to make this a bit easier to grasp. You'll also want to reassure your clients that the secondary photographer will also be top notch and not just somebody/anybody tagging along.

And as a last remark for the moment, your contact form includes a list of topics you can support clients with. The list is much longer than what you are featuring on the site for the time being. So, in terms of building your reputation a little or strengthening your claim that you actually *are* capable of helping people with problems in all these fields, you might want to have something to show for yourself in that regard. Getting the approval to post this stuff online might admittedly be difficult, but I think some diversity in types of photography you can do, might be a plus in demonstrating your skills overall and in this way - again -  reassure potential clients that they've come to the right address to find a solution for their problems.

Edit:

Since you've mentioned the mobile side of things and I just had a look on your website with my phone and (to over-dramatize a little) I hardly recognized the site. The focus appears to be totally different. At first glance it seems your much more invested in portrait shooting and are especially skilled in post production... i.e. it's a bit confusing.

Also: on my tiny iPhone SE, the menu item to open the categories of the page are half hidden behind the Crew One banner.

And I get the same oversized text there for "Platinum" and "Photos & Video" (Safari on iOS 11.4.1) in the weddings section.

The way you describe it, I don't see why this couldn't be a photo series article featuring some original Swedish quotes in a print magazine (or a blog).

I think, you should just travel to Sweden and do this as a photography project. ;-)

Don't most iMacs have a built-in SD cardreader?

If I'm not mistaken, they do since the late 2009 models (A1311 and A1312).

After a very long time, I have taken a few exposures again. Additionally to not having had any practice with my camera, I just found out that I have also forgotten how to use Flickr (and was somewhat overwhelmed with all the data sharing info due to the new owner of yahoo). So, sorry for not being able to embed the images directly. If I find out (again) how this works, I will edit this post. ... Edit: Yeah, it seems to work now.

At this point, I can only compliment you on your ambition to keep improving your skills.

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your "practice" shots on fast moving targets.

"Not that good"...?

You're kidding, right?

#55267 I hate living room performance venues

Posted by Malice on 30 April 2018 - 11:22 AM

That's my opinion, too. What these images are lacking the most, is the crowd listening to the music. Or at least a handful of people, like a show-producer/organiser or a couple of stage hands, other people preparing for their practicing session, whatever. Like this the shots appear too much like an artificial setup.

Except for the last one with the singer, which is fine on its own.

#55152 Please Critruque and help

The eyes are very crisp but I was told it was a very poor photo. Yes I was hurt as I was told I either have a bad camera or I don’t know what I am doing. The grass and many areas are out of focus. And they are right.

You shouldn't take everything to heart that you are told.

This is a good photo. Okay, maybe it's not perfect, but it's far from bad.

When taking photos of individual subjects like this bird here, it is very often a wanted technique to separate the subject in the foreground from the background by having the latter out of focus. I.e. this is often done on purpose. There's nothing wrong with that. Rather to the contrary.

As has been mentioned by ScottinPollock already.

#54672 Advertising.

Posted by Malice on 26 March 2018 - 01:45 PM

You're welcome.

I see your point with landscape/nature photography. Even though it seems you should be in an excellent position to get into that field. After all, you're based in Scotland, which is rather hard to beat when it comes to dramatic landscapes. And with all the birds on the northern islands, you have access to a lot of material many wildlife photographers will envy you for. ;-)

Anyway, I think before you start defining your advertising, you need to know which direction you really want to get into and then have a good look at what's needed in that particular field.

For what it's worth, when I started out with my D3100 I found the Guide mode quite helpful.

It's a "wizard" type assistant, which helps getting the right settings for the type of exposure you want to take.

#53379 Your best photos of 2017

Posted by Malice on 06 January 2018 - 01:21 AM

This is my first try posting images that are linked to flickr. Here's to hoping it works.

I have taken very few exposures during the whole of 2017. Anywhere, these are the ones, I like best. All of them were taken during a short vacation.

#52321 D7100 help please

Posted by Malice on 08 November 2017 - 12:37 PM

As far as I can tell, all iMacs starting from the Late 2009 model up to the current one do have an SD card slot. Either on the side (below the CD/DVD drive slot) or on the back.

Actually, that's what I use all the time for transferring my images from the camera to the Mac as it's much faster than the USB connection to the camera itself. I use the "image capture" application for this.

At the bottom of the image capture window, you can select, to which folder you want your images copied.

On the lower left of the image capture window, you can select which program should automatically start up, when you connect the camera. You might have to expand the section by clicking the small triangular arrow. There you can also chose "Photos" as your go to application.

When you start "Photos" the camera should also be visible in the side bar and you should be able to import images from there.

#49662 Coupla questions about iTunes

Posted by Malice on 07 July 2017 - 11:58 AM

The iPhone can play MP3 and AAC and probably most if not all other formats that iTunes can create.

As has been mentioned, AAC is regarded as doing a better job at compressing music than the mp3-algorithms.

Personally, I've started with MP3 and I just stuck with it. The difference in quality or file-size don't concern me. I have neither a high-end stereo in my living room nor high-end headphones for my iPod(s).

#49537 One week, one camera, one lens week ending July 02 2017

Off the top of my head, this is the "one week, one camera, one lens"-thread with the most remarkable fotos, yet. Great work all around.
