#45526 Glencoe &Glen Etive

Posted by iNYONi on 27 January 2017 - 02:33 PM

Took a few days off work to give myself a little time with both my cameras (750 & 7100). Decided to take a 2 hour drive to Glencoe and Glen Etive. Sky was cloudless and a bit hazy so had to try and keep to the shadows.

Here are a few of my favs.

I like the idea...My neighborhood was basically the subject of my version of the 36 on 35...

I guessing here is a thread to keep all those things together so they don't get lost on those older threads. New people will be able to scroll through and get to see a bit of our homes.

I forgot I was going to kick this off....

I live in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The city is located almost on the Tropic of Capricorn so the weather here is quite warm. It would be very comparable to Miami, Florida. The main feature of Gladstone is it has one of the biggest natural harbours in Australia. Bigger and deeper than Sydney harbour. Because of this and our proximity to a number of natural resources it is also the country's second busiest export harbour. Coal, Alumina, Aluminium and soon to be LNG are the major export products. It is very much an industrial town, but also due to the location and climate it has a reasonable lifestyle balance. We are located on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef and due to this and the higher average income Gladstone also hase the highest boat ownership per capita of anywhere in Australia.

I don't think anyone would ever call Gladstone "beautiful." It's a nice place to live, mainly due to excellent employment opportunities and having that lifestyle balance. But the city is small, fairly isolated and not well serviced.

To show an example of the diversity these first few shots are all taken from a similar area called Auckland Point.

Here you can see the mix of marina, parklands and coal terminal in the distance. The port authority maintains all the parklands here and do an excellent job. Much better than what the local council is capable of doing.

Look a bit further left and you will see the states biggest power station (Coal fired of course... We love our coal here  )

Back to the right again and this shows one coal terminal. There is another far in the distance which has just finished construction and another behind the camera which is now being converted to container and oil/petrol wharves. In the far distance you can see the first of the LNG flairs. This is the first of 3 LNG plants being built on Curtis Island on the far side of the harbour.

Looking back to the location the previous photos were taken from. The port authority has constructed a new park at the base of that hill since taking this photo.

Here is a photo from roughly the same place and FOV as the lit red balls, but in daylight.

#44685 Upgrading from D3300 Which would be a good step up?

Posted by Merco_61 on 02 January 2017 - 12:32 AM

The D90 is not an upgrade from the D3300 as the sensor is so old. It is, at best, a sidegrade. It is much easier to use because of the ergonomics but there is no room for cropping and the high-ISO noise will probably be frustrating after learning on the D3300. If you want the ergonomics of the D90 but a modern sensor, the D7100 is a nice budget-friendly option.

The 3300 is a very capable model. The main advantage of the 7000 series is better auto focus with moving subjects, more accessible controls, and brighter viewfinder.

Image quality... not so much.

Before considering an upgrade, you should really ask yourself what are the shortcomings of the 3300 you are experiencing. It is possible new glass might be a better upgrade than a new body.

Peter: I am always amazed at the detail you manage with the 105--I clearly need to try shooting with a smaller aperture. And the image with the lights is very intriguing--I've been studying it trying to figure out how you did it. :) Where did the lights come from?

PebblzNnutz: That beach image is super striking--so is the dead fish thingy, but in a less pleasant way.  I see you are another one who is using the Tamron 70-200 to great advantage--I'm not loving mine at the moment, but you inspire me to keep trying with it.

Deano: A very good omen indeed! Fantastic!

Kenafein: Sigh...you and PebblzNnutz are convincing me that I am doing something very wrong with my Tamron lenses. This is a wonderful capture--so detailed and beautiful. I have the 150-600 and have used it on my D600 as you did, but I didn't get nearly the same sharp results.

Anyhow, I mostly stepped away from weddings this year. Just didn't have the time with my new job (55+ hours per week when the commute is included...some of you are rolling your eyes because you do more than this, I'm sure), but I did shoot this wedding a couple days after Christmas. I didn't pose this couple beyond telling them where to stand--they were so into each other that I just let them be themselves and shot away while they interacted. It was fun enough that I'm rethinking my decision to back off of wedding work... Oh, and look, I used my Tamron 70-200...

31926053151_f6c95d960f_b.jpgHoliday Wedding by Nicole Fernley, on Flickr

D810, Tamron 70-200 @ 122mm, f/2.8, 1/125, ISO 3200 (why must they alway have a dimly lit room?)

So, I stuck my Tamron 70-200 on my D810 to give it a fighting chance and put my Nikkor 24-70 on my D600 and kept them both with me so I could switch back and forth conveniently. I ended up using the D600 more often than the D810 because the Nikkor lens seemed to help it focus more quickly and accurately--not because I wanted a wider angle. I was cursing that @$%&! Tamron all night.

And just for fun, here is a photo from earlier this week of my neighbor snowblowing his driveway. I was super intrigued by his attire--gym shorts and a t-shirt with heavy winter gloves and hat. It was 23 degrees Fahrenheit. I took this with my 85mm on the D810 only because it was what was attached at the time. I figured he would be done by the time I grabbed my 150-600 and got it on the camera, so I snapped it with what I had and then cropped the image like a madwoman. Cropping madly seems to be much more possible with the D810...

23 degrees...sheesh.  :o

Happy New Years day everyone.

As luck would have it, we have rain and a double rainbow this morning.  This has to be a good sigh for 2017.
