#31269 Your Best Photo, Week Ending 31 May 2015

Posted by Merco_61 on 29 May 2015 - 01:49 PM

Maaaaaaybe? Is that a cat in the upper left behind the bud? Silly cats...they seem to always want to be where it is most inconvenient. We have a cat who thinks my husband's sole purpose in life is to serve as a cat recliner.

Correct, it is his left ear that is in the photo. He wanted to box the buds and couldn't understand why I stopped him... Sometimes he forgets that he is 15 years old and tries to play like a kitten.

Flowers again this week. Two different flowers on the same dahlia to be precise.

Both are shot in open shade in ambient light without modifiers.

EDIT: Can anyone spot the cat in number 2? He wanted to help...

#31231 D700 Err code

It sounds like a communication error between the camera and lens. Get some De-oxit and clean the contacts on both sides, and the lens mount itself. Test the springy contacts on the lens for free movement and check that they all protrude the same amount. While you are at it, check that the lens mount on the body isn't loose.

If you can't find De-oxit, use propyl alcohol on a cotton swab, but be prepared to clean contacts periodically as the alcohol doesn't protect against new oxides forming like the De-oxit does.

If this doesn't fix things, it is time for a trip to the repairman.

It's about time to bump this thread again and see if somebody else wants to add to it.

My brother will be 42 on Sunday, we celebrated his birthday some days early.

Sunlight with a scrim and a couple of white reflectors to get the even light.

Tilt-shift blur filter applied in PS. I could have used the 105/2 DC wide open but the chocolate shavings and the two sharp hearts are sharper this way.

I am turning more and more towards smaller, less obtrusive lenses when shooting for myself rather than for clients. The difference between the 24-70 and the old 28-75 with 67 mm filter diameter and a small tulip hood is great, especially without the MB-D10. It is much easier to be unobtrusive without the HB-40 hood scaring people... I tend to treat the 28-75 as a f/4 lens and mostly use f/5.6 to f/8 with it though to get less vignetting and less CA than wide open. 400g less in the bag or around the neck is nice too. Sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be nice to have a D7200 with a Sigma 10-20, a 16-85 and a 70-300 in a small bag like a Hadley to use when out doing things with the family rather than working or out to take photos. A gripped D700 with the trinity is ridiculous in this setting even if I wouldn't be without them for work.

Doesn't sound too good, let's just hope it isn't too expensive to fix it.

Once again a series that is not just a collection of good photos, but works together as a series. Well done!

#31197 Adobe Premiere won't open up time lapses .mov file.

Posted by Merco_61 on 19 May 2015 - 03:28 PM

The D800E has an intervalometer built-in that is quite a powerful tool. In the Swedish manual it is on page 201 to 206, just before the timelapse functions.

Premiere and Premiere Elements don't handle h264 .mov files. You will need to transcode to some other format for editing in Premiere. I think that either iMovie or iDVD can do the transcoding for you on a mac but as I don't use Elements I don't know what formats it can handle.

The timelapse function in the D800 is probably a good thing if you can get the workflow right but shooting with the intervalometer and building the movie in post seems easier to get right.

#31166 Nikon MB-D12 Grip

Posted by Merco_61 on 16 May 2015 - 11:21 PM

I wonder how many of those reviewers haven't got the rubber cover perfectly into the stowage holder in the grip. This cover is a tighter fit than the one on the D800. When there is no rubber sticking out where it shouldn't, the MB-D12 fits just like it did on the D800.

I tried to do something on Witness, but Mute Witness by Morrissey would have been too mean.

#31127 D820 - is it around the corner?

Posted by Merco_61 on 12 May 2015 - 12:37 PM

In Europe we have a level below NPS called NPU (Nikon Professional User) where there is no need to be a pro, and the required equipment is one pro body and two pro items (lenses or speedlights). This gives a subscription to NikonPRO magazine, 10% off education supplied by Nikon and free phone support. I suppose this is similar to the CPS Silver membership.

NPS members can check out one body and one lens for a day or two per year and only pay for postage both ways. This is, however based on availability of the loaners. We also have a 72 hour guaranteed turnaround for repairs and service. If it takes longer, Nikon supplies a loaner until the camera or lens is fixed. There is a NPS presence at most sports and larger cultural events.

#31111 Editing exercise, week ending May 10 2015

Posted by Merco_61 on 10 May 2015 - 11:32 PM

I made one more. This time I tried to mimic using a lith-film step to increase contrast.

gallery_1251_496_271315.jpg

I started out with Tri-X in SEP, then I tweaked the curve quite a lot:

gallery_1251_496_2267.png

Then I added a blue filter to lighten the sky and further increase contrast.

As a last step I added the black border.
