#39902 D800E & D5200, lens choices for AIRSHOW

Posted by Merco_61 on 20 June 2016 - 08:47 AM

Did you catch Patrulla Aguila? Their starts and landings in formation are famous. Their precision usually is as good as Team 60's was, but the Casa has some power where the SAAB 105 is more like a powerful leaf blower... Turkish stars would be nice if you got some pics too.

Quite a few of my SAPS friends were there either day, or in some cases both days. Wish I could have gone, but I had family stuff part of the weekend and some friends in the triathlon competitions here in Uppsala.

Will you be up in Linköping at the end of August? The Swedish Air Force celebrates 90 years with two days of air shows on August 27 and 28 at Malmen.

M.Beier, the 6D is FF, the equivalent of a D600, otherwise some nice observations.

You can either see the tourists as in the way or as a sign that the city still lives on... Nice set as usual.

#39859 A couple of details of Uppsala Cathedral

Thanks, Bart!

With those clouds behind the spire, I just couldn't resist trying even if shooting HDR without a tripod is a trifle difficult. I am glad I pulled it off.

#39852 Active D Lighting Question

The ADL information is hidden in the maker's notes like the picture control. This makes everything but Capture or View NX ignore it. ADL works just as well with center-weighted metering as with matrix. It is processing during capture, but the recipe is lost unless you use Capture or ViewNX for your processing or shoot in .jpg.

I hope you have some to share when you have processed your catch of the day. You will probably have a better keeper rate than I had at Hässlö, 2% keepers is about where I end up when shooting prop planes. I think you had much more jets and fewer prop planes today.

Very unprofessional behaviour of the "pro". This is the problem with these times we live in, where someone who *can* sell services and has a DSLR but *can't* produce gets the job.

I have never attended a rodeo, but some other events that are steeped in tradition. The first thing I always ask the venue for is a copy of the commenter's notes, just so I don't miss something important. A missing rider/missing man/missing plane formation is such an important part of showing respect that I can't understand what she was thinking as she neither paid her respect nor documented it.

Thanks for sharing, even if the behaviour  you observed isn't nice, it is still sadly a part of our times.

I wanted to see if something relatively lightweight would work. It seems like it did.

Carbon tri-bikes with >80 mm rims aren't quite ideal on the cobbled streets around the university and cathedral.

#39775 Photo Transfer - D5500

Posted by Merco_61 on 17 June 2016 - 09:14 AM

There are two problems with the idea of uploading to the cloud directly. One is that the screen on the back of your camera isn't well colourmanaged, so you don't know how the colours are presented when viewed on a colourmanaged screen. The other is that few photos are as good as they can get SOOC, you will need to do at least some postprocessing to get a photo ready for sharing.

#39720 Need some help explaining variation in exposures

Posted by Merco_61 on 15 June 2016 - 10:57 PM

I suspect that you might be right. The heavily centerweighted metering is more like a semi-spot and must be used carefully.

Another factor is how the terrarium was lit. Under incandescent lighting, exactly where in the on-off cycle the exposure is locked can make a big difference. If you switch Auto-ISO off in such conditions, the meter will even things out. 1/160 can be high enough to get erratic exposure under some light sources anyway as the light cycles so you need at least 1/60 if not longer to get a full cycle.

Tonyfromalnwick, is that song from the "The Best Years of Our Lives" album? I don't have it, but my brother had a much played vinyl copy.

#39708 Why am I losing focus?

Posted by Merco_61 on 15 June 2016 - 11:47 AM

This lack of "pop" is the main reason I almost stopped using consumer normal zooms many years ago. There are situations where even the plastic nasty 35-80 is the right tool, but the lack of microcontrast makes for much work in post... The 28-105 is one of the better in it's class, but a 85/1.8H, AF-S 85/1.8 or an Ai 105/2.5 are better choices for most situations where you would want a short tele lens as they draw the border between sharp and unsharp better. The 90-105 mm macro segment, both Nikkors and third-party, are nice for flowers too, with the added advantage that you can come much closer.

#39697 D750 vs. D810

Posted by Merco_61 on 15 June 2016 - 09:26 AM

Unless the background gets too over- or underexposed. Just keep an eye on the meter, in manual it will show how much over or under your ambient exposure is, not counting the flash. It is much easier in practice than talking about it. The trick is to set the normal exposure a bit under, so the spill-over from the flash gets the background spot-on.
