#48824 Can't update the firmware on my d500

Posted by Merco_61 on 31 May 2017 - 02:40 PM

The usual problem is that one puts the folder with the update file in root instead of just the file.

#48805 Photographing wildlife with my Nikon camera(s) through a Meade ETX telescope.

Posted by Merco_61 on 30 May 2017 - 07:39 AM

If I remember correctly, the ETX 90 mm is 1250 mm focal length and f/13.8. It is a beast to use well, even if today's high ISO make it easier to use than in the film days.

#48803 Photographing Formula 1 race

A week is on the short side to familiarize yourself with a new camera. I think you will get more predictable results if you set the camera to the Sports scene mode.

Once you have some keepers, you can play around with the shutter priority settings (S mode). Using a short shutter speed (high number) will freeze the action, following the car with the lens (panning) and using a longer speed can give a nice blurry background that accentuates the speed. The thing to remember about shutter speeds is that they are, in fact, fractions in the normal ranges, so larger numbers are shorter.

Nice series, but I especially liked #926 as the bike has space to move into.

#48747 why nef pictures do not show unless i open viewnx 2

Posted by Merco_61 on 28 May 2017 - 12:08 PM

Nikon NEF Codec worked up to 8.1 officially. I have no idea if it works on 10. I am not sure if you get previews in explorer or not as I haven't owned a windows box for many years.

We are going through a very unfamiliar heat wave and sitting down at the computer hasn't been an appealing thought. Here are some edits, I will have more when I get to it.

#48711 Nikon D3300 DSLR camera

It is written that way so even Canon shooters find the ad. Canon's small sensor is the APS-C format, a small-sensor Nikon is DX. The heading is usually loaded with popular search terms in many ebay listings.

Could you share the EXIF as well as the photo samples?

#48646 What is your favorite lens you own?

Posted by Merco_61 on 22 May 2017 - 11:38 PM

My biggest moneymaker is the Nikkor-O Ai'd 35/2, but my favourites to use are the 105DC and the MicroNikkor 105/4 Ai'd.

#48623 One week, one camera, one lens week ending May 28 2017

Posted by Merco_61 on 21 May 2017 - 05:51 PM

My combination for this week will be the D300 and Tamron 17-50/2.8 again. I didn't find the time to do the lens justice last week. Let's hope the light and the stress cooperate better this week.

If anyone else wants to shoot any single lens with me for a week, feel free to post what you get in this thread.

#48582 Imaging plant specimens in museums

Posted by Merco_61 on 18 May 2017 - 10:51 PM

Stacking will probably not be needed if you shoot the full specimen cards with a 55 as the distance will be somewhere around 60 cm, the reproduction ratio ~1:8.9 and the DOF around 40 mm @f/8.
