#50512 Waterproof covers for D700 & D300

Posted by Merco_61 on 21 August 2017 - 12:47 PM

Check with Tom (TBonz). I don't remember what he uses, but they are, or at least were available for the D300 and D700 when he mentioned them. As a stopgap while you search for a permanent solution, OP/Tech rainsleeves work quite well and are cheap. I get mine here, the price in Sweden is ridiculous.

#50509 Color to Monochrome

Posted by Merco_61 on 21 August 2017 - 11:45 AM

This might be a good starting point. https://www.nikonfor...ep-effectively/

The NIK filters are still free, even if they won't be developed further. Silver Efex Pro works well as a standalone, just export your basic edit as a .tif from NX-D and open it with SEP to do the conversion. https://www.google.com/nikcollection/

The monochrome conversion in NX-D is just like shooting a monochrome .jpg with your camera and is difficult to get to look good.

If you use Lightroom, these settings for the channel mixers give quite good results. https://www.nikonfor...s-in-lightroom/

#50443 Bought something new thread

Good choice on the RZ! Now comes the troublesome phase as you *will* want the 150 for it, perhaps the 210 as well and then the wide angles...

#50426 DSLR or Mirrorless?

Posted by Merco_61 on 15 August 2017 - 09:53 PM

For that use and budget, the DSLR still reigns supreme. The AF in the affordable mirrorless bodies isn't up to following birds in flight yet. The few bodies that can give a DSLR a match are still *very* expensive.

#50418 Ken Rockwell, This one's on you.

Posted by Merco_61 on 15 August 2017 - 01:07 PM

The problem with Mr Rockwell's site is that it is so difficult for the beginner to see the difference between his serious articles and those that are tongue-in-cheek. I think this is the reason so many try to steer people away from his site.

#50417 Cycling Stuff

Posted by Merco_61 on 15 August 2017 - 01:01 PM

It is strange how different the coordination between weight and steering is when switching from bike to motorbike or the other way around. I think it is the balance between steering input, countersteering and weight distribution that needs to be very different when you as a rider are such a large part of the total mass.

Have you tried riding something like the traditional British 3-speed roadster? The Carltons, Pashleys and the lower-end Raleighs feel more motorbikelike than most other bikes in my experience.

#50396 how do i do my d5300 firmware update

Posted by Merco_61 on 14 August 2017 - 03:57 PM

You start by going here.

Expand "Updating the Camera Firmware"

Follow each step exactly without trying any shortcuts.

When you are done, you have the latest firmware in your camera.

These are all shot at the big square in the centre of town, imaginatively enough named "Stora torget" or  "The big square".

THe architecture around the square is quite varied in style.

#50351 D3400 keeps locking up

Posted by Merco_61 on 11 August 2017 - 12:33 PM

It sounds like some kind of communications error between the camera and the card. Trying another card is worth doing before you give up and take the camera back to the shop. If I remember correctly, the light on the D3xxx bodies shows activity on the bus for the memory card.

#50336 Photo is staying in Manual Focus

Posted by Merco_61 on 10 August 2017 - 12:02 PM

What version of the 70-300 is it exactly? There were some early versions that didn't have a focus motor in the lens, instead relying on a motor in the body that your D3400 doesn't have.

If the lens is any of the versions without VR, I think your lens and camera won't work fully together.

#50329 i ask this question else where get mix info. i am look for solar filter for 5...

Posted by Merco_61 on 09 August 2017 - 10:07 PM

You have to go the other way around... The filter needs to be as large as, or larger than the filter diameter the lens is made for.
