#37967 Astrophotography

Posted by morticiaskeeper on 13 April 2016 - 12:42 PM

My scope came with an eq mount. I've got a Skywatcher 1145p with the eq1 mount. I've added a motor to help keep track.

The Raspberry Pi camera has given me the best results, but I still haven't had a chance to put the D7000 to work yet, although I have checked to see it fits and focuses.

If you are using a standard eq mount, adding a dslr will affect the balance a bit. You will probably have to move the weights outwards, or add a bit more weight to get it nicely balanced. It's difficult to explain how to balance, suffice to say that you'll know when it's right, like a rear view mirror in your car, once it's set, nothing else feels right.

Jupiter is in a good position at the moment.

Go for a scope and adaptor, unless you're going to spend a fortune on lenses and mounts, the scope will be the better bet.

My Nikon to scope adaptor cost about 20GBP.

Bear in mind that the majority of astrophotography pictures that you see are composites of a number of frames from a video recording. Registax is the software that most people use. Various techniques of processing allow you to reduce noise and increase light.

I've been using a Raspberry Pi with a 5mp camera, stacking about 400 frames to get a basic shot of Jupiter. For moon shots, I've been using a D80. Now that I've got a D7000, I will probably use that for video from now on.

#37576 Lighting Advice

If I was asked for crooner, I would be thinking high contrast, monochrome with a key light set to the side & above. Another flash to the other side & below, but with much less power, just enough to show the dark side of the face.

Have a look at a half moon, if you use a lens, or scope, the craters nearest to the dark edge look well defined. Try to do that to the face.

Main light quite soft, but not beauty soft. With my gear, I would be looking at a soft box, quite close in.

OR...

A softish spotlight, still high to the side. Drinking straws and duct tape!

My D7000 grip battery seems to be used first, it gets a regular charge, but the in camera battery always seems full.

Much prefer the old system of both batteries in the grip, it just seems logical. The grip does have to come off for days like today, when the aircraft cockpit is too cramped for camera and grip!

#37360 Why increase ISO when shooting in a low light condition?

Taken on D40/D80, Nikon 18-70/Sigma 70-300, ISO 3200/6400 1/60 F4.5

The D40 is up for sale, 'cos I just bought a D7000 :-)

Poorly executed shot? Lots of 'em!

If I was taking a gig tonight, I would expect to take a couple of hundred, and be very happy to get thirty worth showing.

No VR, manual focus - too many distraction to rely on AF.

Peter, wish I knew about the exposure trick on 6mp before, my only 6mp body is selling on eBay now!

For my gig shots, a monopod would be out of the question. The club is VERY small, and VERY crowded. I have, however, used a string tripod. A piece of string bolted to the tripod thread on the camera, with a washer tied to the other end. Stand on the washer and pull the camera up, tensioning the string.

There were some events where I was running the lighting rig, then it was easy to call up the lighting I wanted :-)

When I was taking gig photos, I wouldn't dream of using flash. A perfectly exposed picture of a musician, taken with flash, isn't what the people at the gig see, they see a dark set with a mixture of coloured lighting.

I used ISO6400, 1/60 f4.5 for the majority of my shots, handheld at 300mm. Less grain would have been great, but it's part of the trade off.

My first shots from the D7000 that I'm allowed to show - the others were commercial shots.

Nite watches invite photographs of their products, so today I took these.

I've just upgraded from a D80 to a secondhand D7000 body. I went for the D7k because I use the D80 cls flash system and didn't want to lose the remote flash options.

#36948 Why is WiFi tethering so bad?

Posted by morticiaskeeper on 13 February 2016 - 10:43 AM

Well, it was too cold to lug everything into a field, so I changed the wifi channel on the router from 11 to 5. It now works, and for a lot less than the Camranger version of the same unit.

Live view has been switched on in all tests.

I'm going to take everything into the middle of a field, where there is no chance of wifi interference!

#36654 Can I "borrow" a D7000 RAW file?

Thanks Peter. Everything working as expected.

Thanks, I thought it might, but I always seem to get confused with the flash system!

I have just broached the upgrade subject with She Who Must Be Obeyed, she said yes!

I see thar Ufraw is available for Windows. That should be able to import the files into GIMP.
