Hi there,

I am getting a D810 with a Nikon AF-S 16-35mm f 4 G ED VR lens for Astro and Landscape but was wondering, what is the best all-around lens for shooting anything like people, animals, birds, sports/action etc

thanks in advance

There is no all-round lens. The range where you already have the wide-angle is a versatile one with lots of lens quality for relatively little money. The rest of the range are the 24-120/4, 70-200/4 and 200-500/5.6. If you go for sports, the 70-200/2.8 is a better choice as the extra stop of light comes in handy. Third-party lenses at the same quality levels can save you some money.

In addition to the zooms, some primes round out the lens set as the DOF can be shallower and the lenses don't have the compromises in optical quality of a zoom. A 35/1.8 and 85/1.8 are good starting points, but they are addictive. Once you start using good primes, you will probably want to cover more focal lengths.

As Peter said, there is no all around lens...Peter provided some good choices above as well.  The 70-200 f2.8 is perhaps my most used lens along with my 24-70.  There are certainly a number of options - both primes and zooms for lenses over 200mm but I would not even think about those until I got a better idea of what I needed beyond the 70-200.  When you get to that point, I highly recommend renting a few of the lenses you are considering to help make your final decision...

Thanks, Peter and Jimmy,

Much appreciated, I will get used to the one I have first and then get into looking for and trying others, as suggested.

PS: I pick up my new Camera and Lens tomorrow :-)

Kind regards

16-35mm is a good wide angle for astro, photography. But if you can get it in the 2.8 version that'd be even better for astro shots. With a bigger aperture your shutter speed can be faster reducing the amount of star streaking and the amount of time the sensor will be on continuously (thus running cooler and less "hot spots" in the photo).
