Hello.

I got a D5100 for Christmas a few years ago. Sadly, I shoot with it on auto most of the time. This time of the year, I use it mainly to take photos at my son's wrestling tournament. I have tried different settings at tournaments, but have never been able to get really good, clear action shots. Now I have been asked to take pics at his club's tournament this weekend. Any advice, suggestions, etc?

Thank you!

What lenses do you have and what are the exposure data from the not really good shots? (Aperture, Shutter and ISO).

You need a shutter speed that is fast enough to stop the action, an aperture that gives at least some depth of field and the ISO to balance the other two parameters. When using a slow consumer lens, I would probably use shutter priority, so I can control the shutter speed, let the aperture go wide open and activate AutoISO to let the camera control that parameter too. With a faster zoom or a prime, shooting in manual with AutoISO usually works best as you will want to close the aperture down slightly to get even more bite from the lens.

Peter is correct...you don't indicate how old your son is, but if high school or above, I'd suggest 1/1000 at a minimum for your shutter speed.  You may be able to get away with a bit slower shutter speed if you have to, but I would not recommend it if you can avoid it.  Even if you shoot with your aperture wide open, you can expect that your ISO will be way up there so you will have to deal with some noise in the images.  It is hard to provide more recommendations without knowing what lens or lenses you have available and if you will be on the floor or up in the stands...

we need more info on what type lens and if your still using auto mode and what mode it was. or if you in full manual or one manual modes too. that would be able to give you more tips and tricks to what you need to fix or change to get better pictures. also how far will you be from mat or ring for wrestling.
