Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 31 December 2017, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style—just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

P.S. The editing exercises are taking a break at the moment, but feel free to play around in the old exercises.

I hope those of you who celebrate Christmas had a lovely holiday!

Peter, I did a double-take when I saw your ISO. Did you run that through any de-noise filter or anything? That's pretty remarkable. Your cat could be the twin of one of our cats. Ours is an old man with one bum eye, but he still plays like a kitten.

Bill, your HDR looks great! That is a super cool image. I don't know if I would have automatically thought HDR if you hadn't mentioned it--I sorta think that if it's not obvious, then that's well done HDR. So, well done, eh?

I'll continue in the cat theme. The day after Christmas we visited Tinker's Cat Cafe in Salt Lake City. It's a business duplex that has a cafe on one side and a "cat room" on the other. Cafe patrons can go hang out in the cat room--for a small fee, of course. They have maybe nine or ten cats that live in the cat room and they are all available for adoption. Our youngest daughter is a cat fanatic, so our oldest daughter gifted her this visit to the cat room for Christmas. We already have two cats, so we won't be adopting any others, but the youngest was in cat heaven for the hour we were there.

I think I'm going to be super self indulgent and post a few of the photos because I can't decide which one I like best... I got back to basics and used my 50mm lens for these.

D810, 50mm f/1.4, all shot at f/2.8 with varying shutter speeds, ISO 320

The natural light in this place was quite nice--giant north-facing window with white walls all around.

The only noise reduction I used was the in-camera High-ISO NR. I am still getting acquainted with the D7200, but the S/N ratio is impressive, especially as this photo is lit by a single IKEA led reading lamp about a meter from the cat. Getting used to the ergonomics isn't easy after using the D300 for over 10 years, and I am not sure how well it will work on the Sigma 150-600 but I will probably adapt to it.

Spökis is 17 1/2 now and a bit stiff in his joints, but he is still a social cat with two-legs he trusts.

My wife and I decided to come down by the water and enjoy New Years weekend here.  We have had some very strange weather this week...It was rather cold (for this area) during the middle of the week and Saturday, while it wasn't exactly warm, it was still comfortable sitting outside in a sweatshirt...saw our first bald eagle fly by while we were eating lunch on the deck.  Temps started dropping overnight and temps barely reached 32F with a stiff wind all day.  I realize that to many of the folks here that doesn't sound too bad and I know it really isn't bad, but...it is all in what you are used to...and used to it or not, it doesn't mean you have to like it :) !

I totally forgot to grab my camera gear - probably because it was cold when we left and I was just trying to get loaded and hit the road.  So the only camera I had with me this weekend was my phone.  I call this week's image Reverse Sunset...The sun itself was setting behind my back when I took this image in the opposite direction

It is cold again today...25F with wind chill to around 10F...Oh well...still warmer overall than many!  Happy New Year everyone!
