Earlier this year I sold off all of my Nikon equipment.  The reasons being I felt I needed to move up in technology and of course I was made an offer I could not refuse.  Upon realizing how much I miss Nikon quality, I decided to tease the Internet a bit and see what I could scare up for newer equipment.  I have been seriously looking at purchasing one of two possibilities, those being, #1 a Nikon D200 or #2  a Nikon D5200, both slightly used with low shutter actuations.  For lenses I am considering both the kit lens and a AF Nikkor 55~200mm lens.  All of this equipment have earned some truly glowing reports as far as performance and reliability.

My problem is I started scouring the Internet for reports regarding how well Nikon honors its Warranty Programs.  At first I was really surprised and disappointed to discover that Nikon does seem to find a way to squirm out of having to repair even equipment that clearly has an active Warranty attached.  I recall when Nikon pulled this tactic on my wife's Coolpix camera and refused to honor the Warranty.  They claimed that she had used a non-Nikon USB Cable and that is what caused the damage to the USB connector and thereby was unable to recharge the battery.  This was and still is the only camera she has.

We ended up spending a lot of money on shipping charges only to receive the camera back without any repairs.  Okay, my reason for asking for advice is that the two cameras I am considering purchasing come with warranties and I want to make certain that I do not paint myself into a corner.

Any advice offered will be greatly appreciated.

Happy Holidays,

Tony

Used cameras do not come with a Nikon supplied warranty as the Nikon warranty terms apply only to the original owner and are non-transferable.

So the question is... who is supplying the warranty for these cameras, and what is their track record like?

I have had one warranty and one recall with my D750, both handled well by Nikon. However, I have this camera serviced at a local certified repair facility in Phoenix eliminating long mail times.

Scott is correct...you are buying used, so any warranty would be handled by whomever is selling the equipment / providing the warranty.

My port for the USB broke once on my D7200.  Nikon said I had to send it in.   My problem was the shipping time to California and back was a long time less I paid for expedited shipping.  I was upset that total time was going to be two weeks.   I mean I had just got a camera and I didn't care for it to be gone.   I decided to call the seller.   He told me to bring my camera in and he gave me a new one.

My 55-300 lens quit working and I did ship that out because I figured I could get by without it.   It was about two weeks with shipping and all.   The service was great other that the time shipping.

Okay, My bad.  I failed to mention that the equipment I am considering is refurbished and does come with a Nikon 90 day warranty

Thanks again for all the excellent comments.  Greatly appreciated.

Yea...I don't see anything older than a D3300 / D5300 on Nikon's Refurbished list...neither of them is available directly from Nikon so you may be right back to 3rd party warranty unless Nikon has agreed to some sort of support for the selling company...you also may find that the cameras may have been refurbished by someone other than Nikon...hard to tell without the details...

I would be extremely surprised if Nikon were still selling refurbished D200 considering the age of the camera.
