some i know has nikon d40 with old model 18-55mm lens. is there anything i can do to help her learn how to use camera. i sent here link to manual and where to find battery's she needs for it and lens caps for back lens and cap for camera body. not sure on iso since only has 200-1600 rating. so not sure how good it will since low iso means not good in low lights.

The David Busch field guide is a good resource to have. https://www.amazon.c...words=busch d40
As long as available dark isn't a main interest, the usable ISO 800 of the D40 isn't too much of a limitation. Getting a tripod or at least a monopod can be a good idea. One thing to remember is that with only 6 MP, there is no room to crop, so more thought and care about composition is needed compared to a newer body.

You're asking mostly about hardware. Honestly, the best thing your friend and do is just go out and shoot while trying to take control of the results. I cut my digital teeth on a D40 and 18-55mm and learned tons without needing anything else.
If she really feels like dropping a few bucks to try something different and low light is in the picture, I heartily recommend a 35mm f/1.8G DX. It's a
very affordable fast and sharp lens that'll offer a whole new perspective after the 18-55mm.
