Hello,

I have been waiting for the new ES-2 slide digitalizer to put on my Nikkor 60mm Macro, for quite a long time and B&H keeps saying this it is backordered.

Can someone tell me when this item will be on the market?  Is it a matter of a few weeks or a few months ?

B&H show it as "Expected availability: Mar 2 2018", Berger Bros and Adorama show it as new item, pre-order only without any guesstimate on when. My guess is that nobody knows, but not before early March.

I assume that your 60mm is one of the newer AFS varieties. Is that correct?

The AF-S 60 G was introduced in January 2008.

The reason why I asked is because Nikon recommends the ES-1 slide copier attachment (with BR-5 adapter) for use with the older 60mm f/2.8D micro. (as well as the earlier manual focus 55mm f/2.8 AIS)

The ES-2 is (I presume) designed for use with AF-S lenses only. If your lens is an AF-S 60mm then the ES-2 is what you want. If it's an older 'D' lens then you should be able to use the combination I listed above.

At least I think that's the case. Peter? Your take on this?

The ES-2 is part of a complete system consisting of the D850, AF-S 60 and ES-2 and needs the IF of the AF-S lens to get the correct working distance. This means that it won't be optimal with the older lens if it is even usable.

fdormoy, if you have the lens without the aperture ring, it is the correct version. It looks like this (lens photo linked from Roland Vink's site).

No.  I bought this lens quite a few years agon (may be in 2005 or 2006. It is the AF Micro Nikkor 60mm 1:2.8 D.  What difference it makes ?

The D version doesn't have the same minimum focusing distance at 1:1 as the later AF-S version. As nobody outside Nikon has seen the new adapter yet, we don't know if it will work with the older lens without modifications, if it can be modified to work or if it simply won't work.

According to what little I've read, your lens is probably not compatible with the ES-2 slide copying system. Before the release of the D850 Nikon recommended the ES-1 slide copying attachment and BR-5 adapter ring for any camera using the AF Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D lens. I doubt if this has changed with the D850.

Assuming that's the case, you have two options. The first would be to try using the ES-1 / BR-5 combination with your current Micro Nikkor or two, purchase a new AFS Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G and wait for the ES-2 system attachments to arrive.

I think if I were you, I would contact Nikon and see what they say, Of course, they'll probably try to steer you towards buying a new lens but, if you're persistent enough, they may tell you whether your current lens can be utilized.
