Just wanted to say Hi. I've been shooting digital on Pentax since about 2010. Over time wildlife photography has pretty much taken over. Given pòor AF tracking on Pentax, I've bought myself a D500. I bought a 200-500 to go with it too, but just sent that back. Hopefully for a refund. Couldn't get a sharp photo with it. So, pondering my next move. Wondering whether I should try another copy, or a 300 f4 and TC, or look at other options which would mean 2nd hand.

Welcome. There's a few of us ex-Pentax shooters here. You will no doubt be amazed with the focusing abilities if the D500 which is incredible.
I'd suggest trying another copy of the lens. All reports are that it's a great lens.

I agree...I've known a few people who have the lens and they were happy with it...as long as you have sufficient light, you should be fine. I'd say that might be more of an issue with a 300 f4 and TC...

Thanks for the welcome guys. Well I ordered another copy of the 200-500. If I have issues with this one I think I'll put the camera back in the box until I can afford a 300 f2.8 and TC

If the new copy misbehaves too, sending it to Nikon UK is free as a registered owner. This lens shows quite a bit of sample variation because of it's complexity at this price point, but I haven't heard of a single one that didn't turn out good after a service.

My new 200-500 was delivered today. Massive difference from my first couple of shots out of an open bedroom window. Will try it over the weekend, but looking hopeful
