If you can use a monopod I've found I get excellent results when shooting with mine not as a monopod but as a pendulum below my camera.  If you extend your monopod down to just a few inches above the ground or floor you end up holding it aloft and your camera just happens to be attached to its top.  I find it very comfortable to shoot and it alleviates some of the side-to-side motion I'm guilty of causing when using my monopod as intended.  A person could add a weight to the monopod foot but I don't think it would be necessary.

That can work well with smaller lenses but won't work for more than a shot or two with a larger lens.
