I suspect my next new toy will be a D500...
Noise levels @ISO 3200 aren't low with the D300, but the photo is quite nice for a cropped capture @14 m. I'll have to play around with it much more before I can draw any conclusions on focus accuracy.
Here's another shot of the bird, with a cooler W/B and the noise reduction made in Dfine.

The detail on the moon looks great--I suppose that has as much to do with a proper exposure as it does with the lens, but still--it's awesome to see. And thanks for showing the noise reduction--Dfine makes quite a difference. Wow.

Probably before August as I will want it for the Swedish Airforce main airshow.

Nice work though. I really like the way the light looks coming off of those light poles. Seems like you're always doing challenging things!
I have finally got around to finetuning the AF.

These were both shot handheld on the D300
So, when you say you got around to fine-tuning the AF, does this mean you calibrated the focus on your own? I don't even know where I'd start on doing something like that. But dang, those are sharp!!
Yes, I made a focusing target like this
and shot it at 2.6m, 6m and 15m with 150, 250, 400 and 600mm focal length to get data for setting the focus corrections using the Sigma Dock.
As I had already done quite a bit of wide open moon shots and found that no correction was needed at infinity, I could skip that step.
It is a bit tedious as you have to guesstimate the amount of correction, input the values in the software, write them to the lens and then reshoot to check if the guesses were right.
Nicole, the text on the depth scale is the Swedish equivalent to "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog", in that it uses the full alphabet in one sentence.
Thanks for explaining--this sounds like it takes a lot of time and effort, but I can see it's well worth it. And thanks for the translation!
The sentence literally translates to "Flying snipes seek rest on soft tufts". In Swedish it reads "Flygande Bäckasiner söka hwila på mjuka tufvor". It is usually used as a way to quickly compare different fonts, just like one uses The quick brown fox... in English. I needed something short to get frequent repetition in the sidebar.
