Kortrijk is a small town (some 75000 inhabitants) where my wife and I grew up, right up to the first part of college (bachelor).
There are sings of settlement since before the Romans. Situated on a river flowing from the North of France, over Ghent to Antwerp, it has a long history of trade.
We hadn't been there in a really long time and spent an afternoon last august, just as tourists would  :)

Gorgeous photos, Bart! What a lovely place. I am amused by differences in perception--you said Kortrijk with its 75,000 inhabitants was a small town. I always thought I came from a small town with 3,000 inhabitants. Would that be considered a village in your nomenclature?

Thanks, Nicole!

I should probably have said "city"?  :)

It exists of Kortrijk and 7 smaller villages.

I now live in a village with a population of a little more than 20000, also together with 4 smaller villages.

There was a grouping of communities in the 1970's and another one is on its way.

This is a small and pretty densely populated country. A neighbouring community is never far away. Rarely more than 10 Km

This night view from space might illustrate this.

to the left, you see part of London.

to the south, Paris.

to the north, Randstad (the Netherlands, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, ...)

but the triangle of light in the center of the image is Flanders  :)

Very few dark areas.
