The limiting factor won't be the lens. The D5300 is a good camera for general use but the AF and ergonomics aren't optimal for sports. Shooting sports takes a lot of practice to get good, consistent results. All the f/2.8 constant-aperture zooms are pro-calibre tools and can get very good results in the right hands. A good sports shooter knows from experience where the action will be and has the camera pointed there and prefocused so the AF will only need to do a small adjustment instead of having to hunt for focus.

Like I said, the lens *won't* be the limiting factor. It is the right tool for the job.

Merco is correct...That lens is an excellent lens to shoot sports with. I have shot many games both indoor and outdoor with the 70-200 f2.8. You will find the D5300 doesn't work as quickly as the lens can. The D7xxx will be much better and the D500 or FX bodies even better!

As you're discovering, the real trick with photography is assembling all the right pieces at the same time. Camera body, lenses, support equipment (tri-pods, monopods, etc.) computers, software and printers, etc. Yes, It can be daunting... not to mention expensive.

i got this camera as starter camera. i can not afford better camera. but would like to have night sport camera lens. if can get better model camera next year i will but for now i am suck with this camera. just tryiong to figure out what i can and can not do with this camera. its learning curve. since do not have camera store near me and cost to go to one hr is like $10 both ways and half tank of gas. i like your help but hard for me to understand sometimes with my compression problem. learn more and retain more if see someone show me then tell me. i visual person. sorry if causing issue with my question.

You're not causing a problem at all. I was just making an observation. This is something we've all had to deal with.

AF speed definitely depends on the camera body as well. With the same lens, my D500 will auto focus faster than D800. I have the same experience with other brands of camera.
Get a f/2.8 lens will allow you manual focus easier when the subject has not enough contrast (car body) or too dim (wildlife in shade) for many AF systems.

No issue at all...my recommendation would be to shoot just about anything you can in daylight and get familiar with the settings as I suggested in the other thread...then try shooting some action during the day...then at night...
No reason you can't shoot night sports with that lens but any sports can be pretty frustrating to shoot as a new photographer...

First, a link to the Nikon download center. Nikon | Download CenterThis is an URL that is worth bookmarking.
Unfortunately, the manual for the first version is no longer available on the site. If you contact Nikon support, they can probably send you a link to a PDF of the manual or sell you a copy of the manual as supplied when the lens was new. The manual for version II is here. Nikon | Download center | AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II

You can get Nikon Manual Viewer 2 for a smart phone...not sure if it has older equipment or not, but that's the easiest way to have your manuals handy...
