I use a D610 which I am completely happy with. I use three prime lenses, which are my ‘permanent’ set - AF 24/2.8D, AF-S 50/1.4G and AF 85/1.8 D. I also tend to buy a cheap zoom, in the summer, to take pics of the dogs on the beach, etc. and then sell it in the winter when there isn’t enough light for action pics at f5.6! Currently, that on is an AF 80-200 F4-5.6 D.
Apart from the pics of the dogs on the beach and racing, the vast majority of my pics are taken with the 50, which has always been my favourite focal length.
I’ve pretty much decided that I’m going to sell the 24, 85 and 80-200 to, hopefully, raise enough cash to buy an AF 180/2.8 D

Not much difference in price between the 180 2.8 and the 80-200 2.8...Just a thought since the zoom would give you a bit more flexibility if you are only going to have 2 lenses...
I’m really not a great fan of zooms. When I take the 80-200 out, it’s at the long end all the time anyway.
My thoughts when I got the 85 was that I could use it for head shots and as a general ‘slightly longer than normal’ lens. I’ve always ‘seen’ things in the 80-90 range, so I’ve tended to be attracted to them.
I could probably use the 180 as I currently use the 85 and have the benefit of a longer reach for my dog racing pics.
At the other end, I do like having the 24 available, but I don’t use it as much as I could.

After quite a bit of research and using the borrowed 80-200/2.8 quite extensively, a couple of things have become apparent...
1. The 80-200 is always at the long end. Not only that but I still have to crop more than I’d like.
2. F2.8 is nice but I could probably live with F4.0 (whilst the f5.6 of my other 80-200 is definitely too slow in the winter months).
3. The D610’s focus motor struggles to focus the big zoom quickly enough at short ranges, apparently the pro bodies have more powerful motors. I can’t afford a D5!
4. That thirty year old 300/f4, that I had briefly about a year ago and so loved, has a couple of newer cousins - the latest being the AF-S 300mm f4 PF VR. Longer than the 80-200/2.8, lighter and smaller too and not relying on the body’s focusing motor could get me over that hurdle.
The discount boys seem to sell them for a little over £1200 and if I sold my TIG welder...
