I always like to be in a position to take photographs all the time and I have the last resort of using my iphone. However, over recent years I have found two cameras very useful and I have got some reasonable shots with them. The smallest is Panasonic Lumix DMC FS35, which has a great battery life and produces good shots. The other which is more bulky and expensive, is the Nikon Coolpix P6000, which has the control settings of many Nikon digital cameras: P, S, A, M etc.

I've been using an Olympus SP510UZ for a number of years now, it's a little bulky but for day to day shooting when my Nikon isnt practical it's a great alternative. I've had fantastic results from it. My Wife now ises this when we go on holiday.

I used to have a Canon (can't remember which one.. 3mp) that was small enough to put in my pocket. I good light is took great picks but low light was not good.

I find my D40 is small enough for me now.

Peace

I used to carry a Nikon 35Ti, a Pentax Espio Mini or a Minox GT everywhere, why cant any manufacturer do anything like that in digital form today?

The Fuji is too large, the Nikon has a too wide lens and most compact compacts don't have a viewfinder. The Panasonic LX- series is almost as large as a small Pentax DSLR with the viewfinder mounted, and an electronic viewfinder lags.

My wife used to carry a point and shoot most everywhere...I used to keep a Canon P&S in my truck - just in case...I think it has been about 2 years since either of us picked up a P&S though...anything other than a quick snap gets the good gear and those quick snaps get taken on the iPhones...We actually have about a 2 or 3 year old bridge camera that we keep in our RV, but most every trip we've taken has had the Nikon gear on board as well, so I don't think we've touched it.

As a camera back up, the iphone is not a bad piece of work. I have had some good results with it.
