My combination for this week will be the D300 and AF Nikkor 85/1.8 D

If anyone else wants to shoot any single lens with me for a week, feel free to post what you get in this thread.

I’m thinking I might put the 20mm f2.8, that a friend has loaned me, on my D610 and see how different it is to my 24/2.8D in use.

Next week, subject to a CF-SD card adaptor turning up (and working!) I may try the D2X with some lens or other...

D610 and AF Nikkor 20mm f2.8

First outing. Well, it’s wide! Significantly wider, in practice, than my 24. It also vignettes, very badly. I haven’t got a filter on it, or a hood but at f2.8 the corners are DARK! At f4 it’s a bit better and at 5.6 it’s pretty much gone. Definitely the worst vignetting lens I’ve ever used.

I’ll try it for some indoor stuff next.

As things stand at the moment, I much prefer my 24/2.8D

Almost November-light today, so I played with a polarizer and the lens wide open to get these.

Nothing from me yesterday. I’m finding it difficult to get on with the 20mm. However I took it for a walk this morning so I’ll see what I got and maybe post some later...

This morning’s effort. I’m finding it hard work, it really doesn’t suit my style of shooting. Bizarre, as I really like my 24mm and expected the 20 to be more of the same. Just goes to show...

The difference between 24 and 20 mm is 10° on the diagonal. This is 11% wider... An ultrawide needs a much more planned approach than a moderate WA lens. Leading lines and a relationship between foreground-middleground-background is no longer just desirable, they are essential. For some photographers, this transition lies between 28 and 24, for others it is between 24 and 20. An ultrawide or a fish is difficult to master, but when you nail it, the resulting photo really stands out.

You’re absolutely correct, as usual, Peter. When I shot on Micro Four Thirds I had a 9-18mm zoom (18-36mm equivalent) and I got on with it very well. Having said that, I used it mainly for interiors. Maybe I just need to practice.

No photography for me today unless the rain clears in the afternoon. Rain showers and dull light don't inspire.

This morning’s efforts were were using the D2X and the 80-200/2.8 and, as such, do not qualify for here - but I’ll post them on my D2X thread!

I’ll be back onto my D610 20/2.8 kick tomorrow...
