Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 8 October 2017, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style—just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

P.S. The editing exercises are taking a break at the moment, but feel free to play around in the old exercises.

P.P.S. Peter is running a fun single lens challenge that we are all invited to participate in. Look for the "One week, one camera, one lens" challenge.

Time for my too large group photo, this time in the autumn.

gallery_1251_413_643261.jpg

Model: NIKON D300
Lens (mm): 24 (AF-S Nikkor 24/1.8 ED)
ISO: 3200
Aperture: 6.3
Shutter: 1/50
Exp. Comp.: -0.3

Much lower light level mid-day early October than in March, so I had to either use flash or raise the ISO. I chose to raise the ISO as it is a lot of work to light this area evenly and the natural light is so good in quality at this location. This raised ISO meant that I had to run the file through Dfine and Sharpener Pro as final steps rather than using the NR and sharpening modules in NX-D.

Piano Bar at the Grand Hyatt-Taipei

Camera allowed, but no lighting, so no flash, fill or even AF.

Nikon d7500, Nikkor 35mm, f/3.5, ISO640, 1/10 sec, table top tripod

Challenging shot due to low light and subject moving.

Odd crop because I wanted to show a lot of the instrument vertically but focus on the wrists/hands and reflection horizontally.  Hope the crop isn't distracting.

Invite thoughts and suggestions.

Finally catching up!

So a bit of quick background...The Neuse River runs about 275 miles through North Carolina starting near Durham and ending at the Pamlico Sound near Oriental.  It is the longest river that is 100% in North Carolina.  I'm sure I have posted an image or two of the Neuse before as our neighborhood in Clayton is bordered on one side by the Neuse and we have fished its banks several times.  For reference, here is an image I shot near our house in August.

IMG_5018.jpg

I think I forgot to mention when I posted the sailing photo that the regatta was being held in the Neuse River, much closer to where it hits the Pamlico Sound.  I am guessing that if traveling a straight line it is probably about 100 miles closer to the sound with this image (D4, 24-70 @ 70mm), ISO 400, 1/1250, f8):

If you look closely, you will see a couple of sailboats (different day than the regatta) and you can barely make out the opposite coastline.  Some additional images from the week in the One Week, One Camera, One Lens challenge for this week...

Sorry I'm so late to the game here! I've been out of town on a road trip, and I didn't actually take that many photos with my DSLR--used my iPhone for the majority of my photos. I've been feeling pretty discouraged with photography lately--mostly because I don't seem to have much time for it anymore. So...I haven't been trying very hard. I was in some incredibly scenic areas and I didn't do much at all...sigh.

Tom, I'm pretty sure I've got about as much catching up to do as you do. Your clouds and ocean and sailboats are very serene looking--quite the appealing image!

Jerry, that's a beautiful image of a beautiful animal--the colors are rich and appealing. You're doing such lovely work with that lens. Were you on a tripod for that shot?

Dogbytes, I LOVE that first image. You captured a fun moment that really shows a happy and energetic little doggo. I'm so happy to see your dogs back in these threads again!

Bill, you know, I wasn't initially sure about that crop, but I think it works--every time I look at that image, I go straight to the reflection, which you said was your goal. I don't know if you did anything in post, but it really stands out. Nicely done!

Peter! I remember your last group shot like this. I should go look at it and compare--gotta see who has new haircuts, eh? Did you use the same lens? I'm so impressed with the depth of field you managed. I'm always nervous about shooting big groups like that, and you've really got them spread out. And did you hide yourself on purpose? ;)

Anyhow, as this week of 8 October came to a close, we were in Virginia City, Nevada. It's an old mining town that has barely avoided becoming a ghost town--they still have all the old store fronts and old houses, and they've turned it into a tourist attraction. We only spent a few hours there--they were having the world championship outhouse races, and it was pretty crowded. We were excited to see the races though. I think we'll go back eventually when it's less crowded and maybe take a mine tour and watch the Old West re-enactors. A few of them were wandering around the town, so I snapped a few photos. Forgive the gimmicky processing here, but I couldn't help myself. :)

And the outhouse races...my goodness. What a hoot. Each outhouse had a clever name and decor to match the name. The Potty Train, Royal Flush, Dookies of Hazzard, and the Tea Potty are a few silly names I can remember. I'm being a bit self-indulgent here and posting a few more photos. These people went all out for their outhouses! Here you'll see the Mad Crapper (Alice in Wonderland theme), the Storm Pooper, and the Dung Fu Warrior. So many good poopy puns. Everything was shot with the D810 and the Tamron 70-200.

Great shots Nicole!  I love that area of Nevada.  I have a very good friend who lives in Minden, just south of Carson City...sure would like to get out there again some time.  Its been over 25 years...

Oh, man, we totally have to go back. We were only in the area for a few days, and it just wasn't enough. Did you visit Virginia City while you were in the area? Such an interesting place. And did you make it to Tahoe?

On the way west on I-80, we stopped in Fernley, of course, since we share the name, and we took family selfies in front of every Fernley sign we could find. We are such dorks. But at Fernley we left the interstate and headed to Virginia City and then the south shore of Lake Tahoe, so we bypassed Reno and Carson City, and we definitely didn't make it to Minden. But it is a lovely area--it's the first time I've been so far west on I-80, so it was delightful to see it. And I don't think I got my big camera out once while we were in Tahoe. Sheesh. Gotta get a mirrorless for travel I think.

I honestly don't remember if we went to Virginia City or not.  My guess is we didn't on my first visit there in 1984 or so.  I think I was there in February so lots of snow.  Minden is just down the mountain from Stateline / South Lake Tahoe - for those not familiar, South Lake Tahoe is the California side of the city and Stateline is the Nevada side of the city.  On that trip we visited Reno, Genoa, Carson City and a few places in both South Lake Tahoe and Stateline.  More on the Stateline side though we mostly got cheap food and played Keno while we caught up with each other.  Second trip in the 90s was with my wife and my Dad for skiing so it was pretty much ski, eat, sleep, repeat...

First trip I did some photography, second trip we did some with a point and shoot and that was about it...both film, of course...It is a wonderful area and it really would be fun to be able to wander and shoot it in various seasons...
